When we first went up we went into Huddersfield, to go and find some estate agents. I literally walked down the road for a minute and burst into tears.
Trust your first instincts, Huddersfield is the armpit of england, the outskirts can be nice, esp the Denby/Emley Moor End and other parts of wakefield are very nice, Huddersield suffers from the valley mentality and more than its fair share of dog rough council estates, with the local pharmacists taking shots at each other, Unless you have 500 K plus avoid Holmfirth and the Holme Valley like the plague. You fancy a taste pop in the Nook pub on a saturday night, wear your fighting clothes!
Loads of benefit claimants are there are few large employers in the town since the chemical/engineering and textiles co's went abroad, and as my mate who works in the job centre can testify, the workshy wont even consider going to Leeds for a job (where there is plenty)
Cant understand why anyone is recommending Brighouse, what a non entity of a town :rolleyes:0 -
I'm from darn sarf, well West Midlands actually, but worked near Pontefract once and can honestly say that genuine West Yorkshire folk are probably the most hospitable I have ever worked with. I have fond memories of neets out in Cas, Ponte and Wakey and had a reet laff!0

Morley? Batley? Wakefield is fine - pick the right area i.e. walton, newmillerdam, sandal. I think Brighouse is OK - i'm off preaching there in the morning!0

HiNot wanting to cause too much of a backlash, but I am originally from Brighouse, and it looks nice, but looks can be deceiving. There is a hell of alot of crime, and many of it is is drug related, also, in the town centre on a weekend, fighting is rife.I have family in Brighouse, still go a few times a week to visit them and I hear accounts of the latest beating, etc etc.It has got fantastic links to the motorway, however, it can not handle the traffic that goes through it, and in a morning, the traffic is horrendous. The house prices are low however. There is 4 main council etsate areas, Smith House, Whinney Hill, Oaklands (where I grew up) and Field Lane, and all are very rough, I know alot of people on the estates, and they tell me things are getting worse too.It is a very picturesque place, until you scratch under the surface....I now live in Bradford, a place that receives alot of bad press, but where I am, is very quiet and we have no trouble.Don't get me wrong, there is some lovely areas of Brighouse, but because it is such a small town, trouble is never far away, if you get my drift.I have nothing against the place, I lived there for 19 years, just wish to give you a very honest view on it, as someone who has lived there and is still very much in touch with people there. All the bestPTGF0

Well I also live in Brighouse so heres my take on things.
I don't live on one of the council estates that you mentioned Prozac but I know people who do( Field lane & Smith house). I have to disagree with you that these two estates are getting worse as they have both had regenaration money spent on them and more people seem to be buying their council houses as a result of this. My MIL lives on Field lane and has nothing but good things to say about it, has had no trouble or been a victim of crime. Brighouse High School is one of the most sort after high schools in calderdale, having acheived Business & enterprise, vocational and leading edge specialist status, so not all the kids are doing drugs some are in fact having a fantastic education, my teenager included, and they are very proud of what the school stands for. Alot of new houses and apartments are been built and quite rightly you pointed out that it has very good links to the motorway. At one time Brighouse did have a very bad reputation. My husband was born & bred in Brighouse went to Eastfield school and back in them days you had to be as hard as nails to survive. At one time if you weren't originally from the town yes you'd have trouble on your hand, if your face didn't fit, if people didn't know you or if you couldn't handle yourself. Every saturday night there would be trouble in the town and you just didn't go there. When we first started courting I couldn't understand why we never when out into town at weekends. But that has all changed for the better and unfortunatley some people still remember those days, as you do, which has tarnished what is now a very nice place to live.Rebel No 220 -
I agree alot of regeneration has gone into the area, but putting new kitchens in does not solve the problem, it is the people living in the houses that is.I am not saying all places are crime free, because that would be a ridiculous comment, and naive to say the least, however, in such a small place like Brighouse, it appears magnified.I understand some people love Brighouse and think it is a lovely place to live, but I will stand by my original comments on it, because I see it and hear of it and have experience it.My brother was sadly caught up in the fracas in Brighouse a few weeks ago, and he wasn't even drinking, he was clobbered for standing nearbyHe stays away from the town centre, because he said every weekend he has been there has been fighting, and, at only 18, you would think he would want to be on the lash as often has he could.I think, it could be a great place to live again, as long as the people who let it down were dealt with properly, we all know who they are, and so do the police, and it will only be a matter of time I suppose. But to paint a pretty picture of Brighouse would be in my opinion dillusioned. As I say, this does not reflect the whole of the residents there, but everyone is entitled to an opinion and that is mine,Giggles0

I think we'll have to agree to disagree here;) I will just say, on living here for 20 years our home has never been broken into, we haven't had our car pinched nor have we been victims of any crime, maybe Iam dilluded, naive or just plain lucky, but I hope not.
Good luck for the wedding:beer: and your DF future

Just looking at areas and has anyone considered Barnsley?
Just did a search on rightmove on barnsley
http://www.rightmove.co.uk
For some reason it seems you can get a hell of a lot more house for your money in Barnsley than in the rest of Yorkshire. Any reason why? (Beyond it being the only town in the uk where marring a reletive is not only accepted but encouraged)?
We have just bought our first home here in Barnsley, you can get a decent place to live for decent amount.
The house we just bought is a 2 bed semi, with rear & front gardens, a garage, fitted kitchen, bathrooms and laminate flooring throughout. Its not one of theses paper house they built nowadays neither (god sound like me dad).
It cost us 97000:)
Asda is a 5 min walk, the town center is a 10 min walk, so is the railway station, bus station etc, with trains to huddersfield, leeds sheffield.
Barnsley itself is a decent enough area, sure it has its rough parts, but so does everywhere.
Also at the moment, there are many many redevelopment plans going on, the new houses they are building behind asda, have starting prices of 120000 for a flat on a flood plain. So i assume the prices of houses will go up within the next few years, i know a house of the same stature on the same street similar to ours sold for 73,000 5 years ago and today these same houses are commanding prices between 93 - 110 thousand.
So a good investment as well
Im moved here from the other side of the pennines, in marple stockport about three years ago, and i love it in barnsley, despite what id heard, most people are friendly, although saying that, i have no idea who "tha" and "thee" are, and can only assume they are famous people in Barnsley:rolleyes:0 -
Just read through this thread and can say that its the biggest joke I've ever read on this site.
Guns, drugs, crime, prostitution are everywhere.
Everyone likes different things and different places and makes recommendations accordingly.
My two pence worth is that as the train between Huddersfield and York is so good is to live somewhere close to it. If the other half is going to be in Hud everyday then it makes sense to be there and you can travel to York as and when you need to.
There are plenty of nice, quite places in Huddersfield and if you drive in most directions for about 10 mins you are in the countryside.
As for the poster who said that the people made her cry please do everyone in Yorkshire a favour and don't move here. I've done plenty of travelling and can say that on the whole people look the same, its just seems a bit more concerning when you're out of your usual environment.0
