Walk around the city centres. Do the people you see look as if they enjoy the same lifestyle as the one you would want to live in? What are the restaurants like, do the locals judge by the size of the portions or the quality?
How much litter is left lying around? How much chewing gum is stuck to the pavements?.....................I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

2 mins up the road from me then! I like Kirkhamgate, lots of my school friends lived up there and I grew up in Wrenthorpe.
If I am feeling energetic I always walk up Batley Road towards Kirkhamgate. Its good as it give you the taste of the countryside without being too far away from the shops!!!!
Oooh spooky!!! :j
I love living here! We get the countryside and the peace and quiet and the birds singing (at 3.30 am  )... hey, you may laugh, but we didn't have any of this living in a terrace in Dewsbury!! What we don't have are massive mortgage repayments (still no money though)!
Yes, Wakefield town centre is a grot hole, it always has been and always will, no matter how much they spend building fancy art galleries and market halls (that the traders can't afford to move into  ). But then most normal folk don't tend to live in town centres, do they? I mean outside of Leeds! I never equate the town centre on a Friday night with "home" cos I don't live there. I live here. And it's nice :TFFW: Weight 06/01/07 11 st 6lbs 01/02/09 - 9st 6 lb
How do you pick up the threads of an old life? How do you go on... when in your heart, you begin to understand. There is no going back. There are some things that time cannot mend... some hurts that go too deep. That have taken hold.0 -

I must just be use to it as I dont mind Wakefield center, I freely admit that it no where near the best place to shop or anything but its ok. Its home!!
And there is a Debenhams coming soon....they are rebuilding the market house and putting a Debenhams and Sainsburys on the old site. Should breath some new life into it all and it will be right out side my work - they'll near get me out!!!!!2010 is the year of bargain shopping! Time to money save, exercise and plan! I like to keep busy0 -
The cost of living (I have found) also differs from place to place within West Yorkshire and more so Yorkshire.Use your judgement, and above all, be honest with yourself.I walk with the world & the world walks with me!I don't make bad choices!!! Other people just fail to see my GENIUS !!!!0

Hi there!
I was reading this post and would like to offer up my town for consideration....I live in Elland. This is a small town 4 miles from Huddersfield, V. close to the M62. My Hubby works all over the country and never has much problem with travel.
We love it here and althogh it was very 'Royston Vasey' when I was growing up here that is no longer the case...honest lol0 -
I can sum Huddersfield up easily, ever seen League of gentlemen? That would be an accurate reflection of the outlying villages, especially the colne valley.
Its a shame, as at one time, Huddersfield had more millionaires per capita than anywhere else in the world, but then the bulk of engineering and textiles businesses went out the window.

Awww no don't be so down on Huddersville! I admit when I lived there I hated it but now I really love visiting. As other people have said, dont live withing about 3 miles out of the town centre and you will be right.
The places in the south off Penistone road are quite nice and you can get to the motorways easily. There are many things in life that will catch your eye, only a few will catch your heart. Pursue those.0 -
Don't blame you for not being tempted by Pontefract or Castleford. And to whoever said it, there is something terribly wrong with being a Cas Lass.
However if that's the area you're looking at there are some lovely villages near, how about Monk Fryston / Hillam or Brotherton. Near enough to sherburn for the train to york and short(ish) journey to huddersfield. It's a gorgeous area, just keep away from Ponte Carlo and Cas Vegas, and only ever face Xscape when you're already drunk.odi et amo0 -
