Places to live in Yorkshire

It is looking very likely my gf will be offered a job in Huddersfield. For me, that is going to mean re-locating out of York. We have a vague idea of moving halfway, perhaps to a small-ish village, where she can drive to Huddersfield, and I can get to York within a reasonable amount of time (as I'll be doing my PhD at the uni).

Today, we drove to Castleford (appeared very run down) and Pontefract (not impressed by that either). We're not keen on Dewsbury or Wakesfield, and my partner's likely-boss said Huddersfield is not that nice (?).

Leaving us with .....?

Any ideas. It doesn't need to have lots of shops or amenities, just within a reasonable driving distance of places. Must be safe. Beyond that, I am clueless.

Suggestions?

It depends on your budget methinks but how about Brighouse ? Close to Huddersfield and links to the M62 for travel to York.

I dare not ask what's wrong with Dewsbury or Wakefield !

You could have a look around at some of the surrounding villages. I would not want to live in the big Cities, but there are some nice villages here in the West of Yorkshire.....We live about 9 miles out of Halifax and I like it. I think though that if I could I would prefer to live in the York District as that is where I am from. Might be worth contacting some local estate agents to see what is on offer around here....We could sell you our lovely cottage...;)
And I have done reading & geography.. too ! ;)

Try Mirfield. It's near to Dewsbury, but Huddersfield side of it and my mum and dad live there. It's really nice and peaceful, not far off the M52 as well
    Nothing can compare

I agree Brighouse is nice-also Mirfield,Gomersal & Little Gomersal much nicer than the some of the other places you've visited...Not far from motorways for you too.But I'm sure you can tell the areas where people look after their surroundings-speaks volumes!
