Places to live in Yorkshire

Huddersfield is a nice place to visit, shop, learn or party but not to live, my opinion of course.
Given what you need in your original post you should look at Brighouse.
The surrounding areas in which to live are Harsthead, Clifton, Woodhouse, Lightcliffe and Hipperholme. They are all old, solid communities with a mixture of housing from terrace to detached with pools, £120,000 to £1,200,000.
The M62 is a few minutes drive, commuter belt for Leeds and more recently Manchester, Brighouse has a nice hoodie free town centre and is only missing an M&S to make it complete.
Brighouse has none of the impoverished areas which often aflict northern towns, is undergoing somewhat of a regeneration and crime is minimal.
Having lived and worked all over West Yorks settling here was a wise move both for lifestyle and for £.0 -
PS I hate Leeds railway station its a horrid place to be on your own as a woman...nowt like York station....but Pudsey Bridge is not so far away and I think thats a nice little place to live too...or theres Sowerby Bridge...oh there is just loads of villages around....and its very pretty...cos your not far from Bronte country and the Dales here...
I agree about Leeds station but have to say I'm a bit confused about Pudsey Bridge!I live in Pudsey - mid-way between Leeds and Bradford - direct train line to York - but Pudsey Bridge?? Never heard of it! Oh and it is a nice place to live but a bit pricey nowadays!
Whoops forgot to add I commuted to Huddersfield every day for about 2 years for work - no big deal travelwise but parking when I got there was a nightmare!0 -
What about Garforth? That would possibly be halfway for you both (although dependent on time of travel journeys in both directions may be busy). It is close to the motorway, has excellent bus services to Leeds, two train stations (one way leading to York and the other to Leeds & I think you can also get a direct train through to Huddersfield), a supermarket, good schools and really everything is within walking distance. If you would like any more information then please get back in touch.
Kind regards

Depends on your budget-Northowram is nice so too is Hipperholme, both within easy reach of Hudds and M62 etc, Although I did work in Hudds for several years I definately prefer Halifax, area, but there are some dodgy areas basicaly you get what you pay for!Growing old is manditory, Growing up is optional! :j0

How about Silsden, Steeton, Kildwick, Bradley, all small villages and close to the lovely Dales and also the trough of Bowland. From Silsden and Steeton you can get the train to Leeds which takes half an hour, then change for York. Driving from either of these villages to Huddersfield takes approx 40 mins.0

Hi
We live in Brighouse (well for the last 5 years just outside)Woodhouse has been mentioned nice middle class area, good schools, but nothing to rent I wouldn't have thought. Are you looking for something like a converted mill - loft living type - or something else ,there are a few very nice mill conversions around. Some nice restaurants coming into Brighouse and a new mill conversion in Elland which is getting a few tapas bar type places.
Will take about an hour to get to York from Brighouse. Fixby is lovely. Your gf boss is wrong, some of Huddersfield isn't up to a lot and it isn't York, but there are some nice areas and definately some cute villages out of town.0 -

Problem with Leeds, is all the good areas are expensive, Chapeltown anyone?
Bradford, is a Hell hole, great for asian food shopping though.
Huddersfield, great Town, shame about the inbred, alcoholic, drug addled neds that inhabit the town.
Halifax, err no thanks Town centre is full of pound shops.
Stay in York, you wont regret it.0 -
I live on the Northern edge of Barnsley, 1 mile from the M1 Jct 38.
Partner is going to attend Hudds Uni this year, (3/4 hour drive in rush hour, 1 direct bus service i.e. practically from the end of our road, to the doorstep of the Uni, trains from stations which are 10 mins drive away and have free parking.) York takes us 3/4 of an hour usually.
Local Villages
Kexborough - mostly ex Council (good Primary & choice of two good secondaries)
Darton & Mapplewell, very mixed housing, some decent local amenities and a branch line train station (to Leeds & Sheffield). Some M'way express buses pass through (and stop)
Cawthorne - posh, picturesque, 8 mins from M'way Jct. 38
Clayton West, Bretton, Scissett (good middle school system) Denby Dale (Train Station to Hudds) Emley... all as previous poster said.
Shopping from these places - all have own local shops/chemists/Post Offices/ mini-supermarkets etc. Barnsley, Wakefield, Huddersfield, and further away, Leeds, Sheffield, Meadowhall....
Good Luck.0
