If anyone is still reading this thread I found this http://www.properties-in.com/areas.html
Might be of some use to someone!0 -
I have just read all the posts on this thread and have had a good laugh :rotfl: at most of them, thanks for that.
For the person who pops up from Oxfordshire to Clecky to work, why not look at Little Gomersal, a nice small village.
Regarding Huddersfield as an area, there are plenty of places some suit some folk, others don't. You have the far flung Meltham, Slaithwaite & Honley etc, all nice in their own ways, a contrast from Marsh !
Cheap bars for students too in Huddersfield.
I lived very briefly in Fev ( Featherstone ) ventured into Ponte & Cas from tme to time on a night out. Wakefield is a massive retail park and 1 beer run down Westgate, ending up at the Redoubt.
Brighouse has a revamped Sainsbury store 500 yards from a big Tesco. The converted Mills by Binks vertical have elevated the town to "wanna be yuppies status " ......
A lot depends on what people are looking for, what your interests are; schools, shops, nightlife, country lanes etc etc.
When the massive pile of soil is levelled out Bradford is going to become the next regenerated City - yippee I can't wait !
Cleckheaton is home to the worlds largest asian restaurant
Mirfield has some nice areas, Upper Hopton is nice and rural.
Hartshead and Clifton are nice areas too...
There are areas I wouldn't pass water on, let alone comment on !!!!:D

Sorry to drag this one up again but could anyone give me any pointers on Garforth? I've had a look around a few times now and it seems like a nice place - would just appreciate a bit of inside info.
Thanks!0 -
Wakefield, Crofton is a nice place, South Elmsall is a much up and coming place (and cheap) with lots of new builds but might be too far South East for you.

I completely agree with some of the post already.
I would like to point out that York is a very nice part of Yorkshire and to move into another area will seem like a come down.
You get what you pay for, move to Harrogate way provides you with the scenic outlook but with a big price tag.
Going into the smaller villages around that area Ripon Skipton etc provide you with the Yorkshire Dale views but transport links to Huddersfield might be a pain.
I personally live in Wakefield - fantastic links with the M1, but dependant on which village in the outskirts you look at depends on the roughness of the area. I would look at Flockton, Middlestown, Netherton and Grange Moor as been good little villages.
Pontefract and Castleford are still suffering from being Pit Towns so lack the level of accomodation and view you would be looking for.
But saying all that, it is such a personal thing unfortunately I can only suggest hitting www.rightmove.co.uk and a fair few trips out to view areas and properties.
Sorry I couldn't be more help, but I wish you well!0 -
Just seen this thread and very amusing it is too. Just to put my view in. Never heard the village of Crofton mentioned so much and what a lovely village it is too. 4 miles from Wakefield but surrounded with greenery. CROFTON VILLAGE WEBSITE may give you some help. Wakefield is going through a bit of a makeover at the minute to revamp it but there is nothing run down about it really unlike Cas and Ponte.
Would like a new neighbour in the village.**BERTIE**Did you Know: It costs more than £325,000 a day to run the lifeboat service? (with no government funding) Please donate to the RNLI0 -
Haven't read this thread for a while and have to take umbridge with Prozac - Brighouse is fine it is a small middle class town on the whole. Yes it has it's rougher areas, but you can't call it rough. Mind I used to work on Brackenhall, but honestly crime in Brighouse is nothing like in cities, lots of places are getting rougher, but the likes of Woodhouse or Clifton are nice. For schools in Calderdale it is generally excellent. A lot towns are rough at the weekend. How many shootings are there in Brighouse? Come on there is a lot of very nice areas- Whinney Hill is virtually in Hipperholme. A few years ago house prices were rising faster in Brighouse than anywhere in the country, I wonder why?0

It is looking very likely my gf will be offered a job in Huddersfield. For me, that is going to mean re-locating out of York. We have a vague idea of moving halfway, perhaps to a small-ish village, where she can drive to Huddersfield, and I can get to York within a reasonable amount of time (as I'll be doing my PhD at the uni).
Today, we drove to Castleford (appeared very run down) and Pontefract (not impressed by that either). We're not keen on Dewsbury or Wakesfield, and my partner's likely-boss said Huddersfield is not that nice (?).
Leaving us with .....?
Any ideas. It doesn't need to have lots of shops or amenities, just within a reasonable driving distance of places. Must be safe. Beyond that, I am clueless.
Suggestions?
Well, I used to live in Wakefield, and whilst the town isn't your cup of tea, there are a few places around it, which are lovely.
West Bretton, Heckmondwike, Mapplewell, and my favouritest of places, which happens to be just outside of Huddersfield, Holmfirth.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
I believe the OP has found somewhere as his profile does say West York's. It would be nice to know where he decided on !"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts."
