Places to live in Yorkshire

I live in Huddersfield and I think it is lovely! I have lived here all my life, as has my hubby and his family. Like everywhere there are better areas than others. Like someone else said don't look at the immediate town centre housing, look further out.
Longwood, Lindley, Linthwaite, Slaithwaite, Cowlersley, Fixby are all nice areas. Some parts of Golcar, above Town end are lovely.
Brighouse is worth looking at too.Cross Stitch Cafe Member No: 86 :j0 -
My GF and I are considering moving to Yorkshire for her career.
We are looking for a quiet village or town that is within 2 miles of a well serviced train station, a 40 minutes ride to Leeds Train Station and a 35 minute drive to St James Hospital Leeds.
We are trying to avoid anywhere close to the centre of larger towns and cities such as Barnsley, Bradford, Castleford, Halifax, Leeds, Wakefield ect.
So far we are considering:
Carr Gate
Garforth
Harrogate
Knaresborough
Micklefield
&
Rothwell / Woodlesford
We'd appreciate feedback on these options and any other suggestion you have.
Thanks so much friendly Yorkshire! :T

Danny, I live in Huddersfield, and have commuted to the LGI since 2002. The bus to the train station is about 10minutes, and the train takes about 20minutes. Not sure if that's any help, but worth a thought maybeCross Stitch Cafe Member No: 86 :j0 -
this thread has interested me greatly as my daughter and i intend to study at huddersfield university from 2010. there are so many negative comments on here which are perhaps a little unfair as many towns have their fair share of problems.
we are looking to rent in the town before putting our money down to buy. could anyone please get in touch and suggest areas of the town that have good transport links to the university and that two women living alone would feel safe and secure.
thanks.
I went to Huddersfield Uni, and travelled from Milnsbridge to uni every day. It took about 5 - 10 minutes by bus. I felt perfectly safe, even returning on my own after a good night out! The bus service to Golcar and Milnsbridge is very regular, about every 10 minutes, as it is serviced by 2 bus companies.
We have never had any trouble living here, and it certainly is not as bad as some would have you believe. (and thats from 25 years of personal experience!)Cross Stitch Cafe Member No: 86 :j0 -
Problem with Leeds, is all the good areas are expensive, Chapeltown anyone?
Bradford, is a Hell hole, great for asian food shopping though.
Huddersfield, great Town, shame about the inbred, alcoholic, drug addled neds that inhabit the town.
Halifax, err no thanks Town centre is full of pound shops.
Stay in York, you wont regret it.
Sorry, but I am yet to meet a person that is inbred, and have lived here for 25 years! And I can't say that I know any alcoholics or drug users.
*Wonders where in Huddersfield you have been * :rolleyes:Cross Stitch Cafe Member No: 86 :j0 -
Hebden Bridge, Holmfirth, Denby Dale, are very nice areas to live. In fact looking on the outskirts of Huddersfield there are many beautiful, rural areas to live, if you are happy to travel to York for the better shopping experience0

I know this is an old thread but I thought Id give a shout out for Calderdale.
Im originally from York and now live in South Halifax. Halifax is fine as long as you choose the right areas. The South of the Town towards the hospital, Saville Park and Skircoat Green is very nice. The North is council estates and the west is fairly grim terraced areas with a predominatly Asian population.
From the south of Halifax along the valley is Sowerby Bridge which I also like, plenty of pubs and the canal. Beautiful countryside all around. Further down the valley is the more upmarket Ripponden and plenty of attractive surrounding villages on the hills.
All of these areas are close to the M62, midway between Leeds and Manchester. Well worth a look for anyone looking for a mix of decent amenities with great countryside on the doorstep.0 -
You're right about Halifax there. Stick to the areas you talk about and it's hard to go wrong.
Sowerby Bridge is where I was a teen, and I'm astounded by how gentrified it's become - very nice down there now, though some of the terrace housing area is still a bit rough around the edges, but there are really none of the "no-go areas in this little town".
That isn't something I can say about BrighouseI take exception at the much earlier comment that Whinney Hill Park is nearly in Hipperholme. The good folk of there and Lightcliffe would no doubt like to put a fence up and keep that place in Brighouse where it belongs :rotfl:
Don't know if it's still the case, but if you weren't originally from Brighouse, then you'd find yourself very quickly in a fight in the pubs there. Bunch of inbreds.
Ripponden is a weird sort of place. Very nice, but it's like a timewarp, plus many inhabitants don't appreciate outsiders. Couple of pubs down in that village are like walking into the pub in American Werewolf in London.
Saturday night in Sowerby Bridge can be like a scene from Shameless. Particularly around once certain pub opposite the church.
Eastern Halifax tends to be really nice. Shibden, Claremount, Northowram, Stump Cross, Hipperholme and Lightcliffe. The latter has a weird council estate in the middle but you don't really notice it, and you can always just pretend that bit is really BrighouseUsed to be under the old Brighouse council, but it's Halifax really, get your thieving mitts off it hehe
