actually they do make a difference especially early on but not because they are cheap... because they react to different levels of hormone - but if you read the back of the pack it will tell you the sensitivity level of the test :)
Clearblue just requires less hormone to react that most cheaper tests and therefor can show a positive earlier on than cheaper tests :)

However - delighted for your SIL and glad she's feeling better :)

Hi Ladies, just wondering those of you having CVS tests etc what are your reasons (if you don't mind telling) is it mainy because you are high risk?
I'm interested as my hubby wanted to research the whys and wherefores of testing but I refused point blank to have any with DS and won't be having them with this pg either.
My reasons for not testing are 2fold, my friend has a daughter with heart probs that were picked up on scan and told the prob is often linked to downs so she was offered amnio etc. seeing the termoil she suffered with the not knowing for sure as she didn't have amnio was horrible, I kno I couldn't have an amnio therefore don't see the point in worrying all the time until bubba arrived. (friends DD didn't have downs) 2nd reason is I kno I couldn't go through a termination (because I'm a wuss and I also don't totally agree with them) so don't even want to be in the position where I was offered one because my bubba wasn't "perfect" I'll love them whatever
I just 'need to know' I will have a breakdown if I just waited another 6 months.
It's not just to rule out downs anyway there are other problems it can pick up which could be alot worse than downs.
I have no idea wether I'd terminate in any situation but I just need to know for my own peace of mind......

This is certainly one of those situations where you can not judge before you have been in this position. Mine was an unplanned pregnancy and although we were absolutely delighted we had to be responsible. I already have 3 children, one of those, the youngest (11) is very handicapped and needs a lot of extra care. It is true and wonderful to say that any future children would be loved no matter what their problems. We would love any child, we understand living with disability and what that really means to family life. Of course we would want and love the child... we already do!

However, we had to think about how on earth we would give our existing children the care they need as well as caring for another child with disability, as I said, being responsible had to take the place of any emotion or pain involved. We hadn't decided what we would do if the result was positive, not 100% but we needed to know in advance and make decisions from there.

It's very easy for people who aren't in the situation to make sweeping statements like they don't agree with termination. But life isn't always rosy and if we would find it impossible to give a good and quality life to a new disabled baby, without compromising the care of our already disabled child then we would have no choice but to terminate, for everyones sake. it isn't something we would want and the suffering would be terrible, but I would never ever call into question someone who is forced to make such a decision.

my fear is being cut or tearing

Polly, I had an episiotomy and it honestly wasn't bad at all. Admittedly I'd already had an epidural but I genuinely didn't notice him cutting and although the sewing took flipping ages I think that was more down to the doctor I had than anything else! (The midwife was starting to look very bored!). The stiches have been a bit stingy and sore and I have to be careful when I sit down but beyond that I'd honestly say it wasn't too bad really. So try not to worry yourself too much.

Keely, I hope everything goes well for your sister.

MFD, water is changed (I assume the pool is cleaned too!) and fresh run between each lady, I really fancied a water birth but discovered (when I went into labour) that my hospital won't allow it as my BMI is too high. The pool at my hospital is basically just like a HUGE bath!

    Some pregnancy themed humour for a friday morning;

    Q. What kind of bee produces milk?

    A. A Boobie:D
  • It's quiet on here today!

AF has (nearly) left the country - have a safe journey AF look after both of you and we will 'see' you in 2 weeks :D

Is it me or is anybody attracted to names beginning with a certain letter? Someone suggested a name to me yesterday that I liked and it begins with the same letter as my current fave boys name and 2 fave girls names (now 3!). Coincidence or is something drawing me in that direction

Only 10 more days and we will know which flavour name we need to be choosing :T :T

Hope everyone is baking well :D

I'm having a disaster, we were notified of a training day next month at DD's school yesterday and we were planning a weekend in eurodisney anyway so we decided to change it to fit with the training day so she will only need 1 day off school instead of 2. Bookied it last night.

Only after booking it did I realise that we will be away when I should be having my 20 week scan (at 23 wks) so rang this morning to change it and they can't fit me in, arrgghh!

Waiting to hear from hospital now but I don't know how long to leave it before calling again, I spoke to 3 different departments who all said I stand no chance of having it changed and I can't go later than 23 weeks because apparently baby is too big then and they can't see in sufficient detail.

If they can't reschedule you I guess you'll have to either change your holiday or pay for a private scan.
I suppose they might get a last minute scan if someone else cancels but I wouldn't hold too much hope...
I know they were struggling at my hospital to fit me in as an emergency despite being told by 2 midwives and 2 doctors that they needed to fit me in because they weren't discharging me until I'd had a scan! and that meant I was taking up a bed/room on the maternity ward - still took 48 hours! But then they dragged me down with no warning just literately "Ultrasound want to see you now, it's on level 2, best hurry".
Another lady turned up having missed her scan whilst I was waiting and was sent away because they didn't have any spare slots at all and thanks to me (ooops) were running even later then normal...
I know she didn't get a new appointment that day but don't know if they managed to re-schedule her another day
