  • I received nearly 2 weeks ago now a letter from the Halifax saying that they are going to repay £5017 but it will take 14 working days. Does anyone know if this can be speeded up? I don't see why they need 14 working days to credit my account!! I need the money now but with Christmas and New Year I've been told it could be mid January.
  • Hi everyone - hope you all had a lovely warm christmas.

I would really like some advice - like most in the country, the last month has been financially very difficult for me. I am a full time student and my sister got married on christmas day, so it put a massive strain on the £'s. I have just had a look at my bank details online yesterday and found out that Halifax have charged me 8 times for going over an overdraft!! (one for paying a £3 parking fee!!)

So i called them and after speaking to them for about an hour, they agreed to waiver 6 of the right charges. But to be totally honest, i can't afford to pay even the 2. i dipped into my small savings account and put all the money in to get me back into the overdraft.

This morning i have checked my e-mail to find out they have charged me another 2 times! so thats 10 times in the last week!!!!!!!

I want to close me account with halifax - as this is totally ridiculous. I've been banking with them for 14 years and feel that this behaviour is totally unaceptable.

So my rant is over, my question is... if i pay off my overdraft so i am on 0, can i close my account? i know they will chase me for the fees (as they have not been taken out of my account yet), but can i not just write to them explaining that they can go jump?

Or should i let them take the money (from money i don't have) and chase them to get the money back?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks xx

    Barclays
    Amount claimed £1500
    Amount paid £300!!!!(under duress)

Wrote to barclays under hardship rules mid October 2008 (genuine real hardship). Sent proof of mortgage payments arrears, court letters from three utilities and council tax. Explained I have lost my part-time job (one of my three jobs;one full time, one part-time, one seasonal) due to cut backs. I am also the only provider for two children. They offered to pay half of my charges over the past year (£195), after calling and pleading my case for 20 minutes or so, this was increased to £300 of which I am still waiting to receive.

The person I spoke to was unsypathetic, abrubt and actually...quite rude. Unlike customer relations at Natwest, who were fantastic, reasonable and understanding.
Forgot to mention, since August Barclays introduced a new penalty by offering a 'reserve' and charging £22 every 7 days for using the facility. I have been charged over £400 since they introduced this 'service'. Although they did write to inform customers before they introduced it in August, I did not see the tick box at the bottom of the letter to opt out of this 'service'. I have now cancelled the 'reserve' by going into my bank. Not as 'clear and transparent' as they claim!!
  • Natwest claim forms
I have just completed a claim for for natwest,I am on benefits and unable to work due to disability.

I have arrears of approx 2,000(mortgage) and some fuel bills.

Do you know what consitutes as hardship? The customer service person was very helpful and also suggested that I mention that if I were successful to ask them to consider my 2 other claims.
    Please help,with defination of hardship.Thanks

I have managaed a sucessful claim under the finanical hardship claim allowance. I have only tried 1 of my 3 bank accounts, but the 1 i tried the bank had previously dismissed my claim when the reclaiming first came about.

    Bank: Halifax plc
    Claim: £627.00
    Received £637.00

They did take their time responding to me, in 1 phone call 2 months after they received my completed form i was on the phone to them for 27 mins mainly on hold and was told somebody would ring me back - they never did but a month later i did get a letter with the offer which i accepted as it was the total charges + calculated interest and an extra £10.00.

Im still to do battle with HSBC and Natwest, but this result has given me a positive attitude.

Ive claimed under financial hardship, whilst i have debts, I work about 24/32 hours a week at a rate above minimum wage p.h. I do not have my own home, i live with my parents. I do not always live on the bread line. What im saying is: try it see if you can claim under financial hardship you may be suprised

I am confused why you are in hardship? Surely people with a home and debts, should take more priorary in this case?!

i am not trying to be patronising but have you been ringing them to chase it up? if you have applied through financial hardship then surely they should have replied by now. i sent my letters to customer services and to the complaints department address that was given on here. i then phoned to make sure they had received and then rang weekly.
i am sorry you havnt heard anything, keep with it, good luck x
    :D
