Tay, you probably are not going to thank me for this....

But as far as your sleep is concerned, you should really be aiming to be in bed by 10pm with NO laptop/TV/anything that will stimulate your brain activity, with a view to winding down and resting so that you are asleep before midnight.

I do realise that there is a certain amount of 'pot' and 'kettle' in the above statement as I am also a night owl. But if you can train yourself to get to sleep early and rise early, you will find that your body will respond to the routine and your sleeping habits will settle down.

I had a period of time where I was employed nights and self employed days. It was murder to me.....I had terrible value sleep when I could get it...nightmares and always dreaming about work. :o. It was around then I got really interested in sleep training though I had used it as a teen too. With relaxed commitment its life hanging. Naturally I am an insomniac early bird, and dh is a night owl who sleeps easily and too much. Sleep training has been a surprisingly important part of us working well together, especially when I am feeling better. :)

I went through a period when I couldnt sleep I had sleeping pills prescribed and if i didnt take the tablets i couldnt sleep i lay awake all night and was knackered by the morning. i did eventually visit a hypnotherapist who gave me a cassette (was a few years ago) and it was of the waves in the sea, birds and all relaxing stuff you play it and let it play til it runs out it did work and i did fall asleep and you just let it play itself out.

  • Hi Tay,
Made it through your thread. :) Told you I would.
I am inspired by you and everything that you've done the past couple of months.
Give yourself a break though, and take the time to rest and get yourself properly ready to face the world. I suffer sleepwise, and as you know I have certain stress levels in my life. The two signs it's getting too much for me are sleep problems and migraine.
My doctor prescribed my a low dose of amitryptyline. It helps with both symptoms. I unashamedly confess to being in bed by 9 or 10 every night, and up at 6. I rarely have migraines any more (except for today - blaming work for that one).
Hope you're on the up again soon, but don't forget how much of a massive change you've gone through in the past few months.

Thanks everyone. Daisy, you're probably right - I always do feel better if I get to sleep before midnight. I promise to give it a go, and you have permission to scold me if you see me on this board after 10pm! Lol.

lostinrates - I've never heard of sleep training! What does it involve?

pinkladyof66 - ooh, I like the sound of those tapes!

Thanks so much for reading the whole thread, wow. I'm seriously impressed, and also touched. I know that I'll have up and down days, but I'm on a better path than the one I was on before, and that keeps me going.

You're very wise to be in bed so early every night, and no doubt I should be too. :o

Do keep in touch, I will be following your progress xxx

It makes you wonder how many people there are out there, trapped silently, in marriages that are not working (for whatever reason). One thing that has impressed me about this thread is that without exception everyone has been supportive.

Tay, this is an very inspiring and empowering thread. It shows women (and men I guess) that you can make it work when it seems like it won't, and you can hold your head up again after doing something you are so worried people will judge you for.

I think as LazyDaisy says it makes a lot of people know they are not on their own and the outcome may not be as bad as expected.

Please realise what you have done for a lot of people.

Tayforth, sleep training is the rather pompous term for a formal and disciplined approach to all we have been discussing. The overwhelming majority of the time I do not do it, when things are going awry more than the one night a week I expect them too (I often cannot sleep on Thursdays) for no reason other than insomnia (e.g, I cut myself some slack if I am kept a wake by health related pain) I tighten my regime.

When I am on a good run I know the crucial thing for me is waking time staying the same, and early.

I use iPad apps these days for meditation or self hypnosis when needed ( mixed quality out there, nothing I'd particularly recommend, but I only 'buy' free ones). But I also use a lot of visualisation combined with that tech niche f allowing myself just to rest my body if my mind won't go.

Eg...last night.... I knew I was going to find it hard to 'go' last night as had been a bit of a fraught day. So I read till late, But turned off tv/radio at ten. (I find turning off radio hard even now) I let myself read without guilt until I felt 'quiet ended' then I decided to try a new visualisation. I decided to pretend I was on a kilo in a very large, clean lake, just drifting around.

(I used to do boats a lot, on rivers often, but dh tried to help and was talking through a drifting on a boat scenario and then mentioned I was drifting to wards a a waterfall, which he thought sounded lovely whereas i just went from almost comatose to bolt awake and alert thinking my boat was going over the edge of a waterfall, crashing my boat and killing me, Rolf, so I have been giving visualised boats a miss for a few months, ;). The lilo did a good job last night. :)

There is a lovely CD called Bedtime Stories by Clarissa Pinkola Estes, which is also downloadable and not expensive. She is a psychologist and shaman, and a very wise woman. Sounds silly, but it makes me feel cared for and safe as I drop off to sleep.

I also recommend 'women who run with the wolves' also by CPE. I like the audio book, although it is an abridged version - the book is also good and more detailed, but sometimes I just want to relax and listen. In Women who run with the Wolves, she looks at how women's lives are shaped through their experiences in today's society using the medium of stories - a bit like parables. There is something for everyone, and again it is downloadable and not expensive.
