Hello everyone
How are you all today?
jackieblack - a red light? I thought that they were only ever green or grey!
lostinrates - that was a very useful post, thanks again.
I see what you're saying about having my phone too close to me. I can't leave it downstairs as I use it as an alarm clock, but I will put it at the other side of the room so that I can't just reach for it - I hate getting out of bed once I'm in it
A bedtime routine would be good too, I guess. I'm not a creature of habit at all, but I can see how a routine would help my body to recognise that it's time for bed. I'm going to try some lavender balm or spray, definitely.
Btw, I like a warm bed too! And I have to have toasty feet or I won't sleepLife is a gift... and I intend to make the most of mine :A

Btw, I like a warm bed too! And I have to have toasty feet or I won't sleep. That should actually HELP you train a 'Pavlovian response' to the ritual of sleep preparation over time, that it is your constant.
Oh, and I hope you are well and happy today.

I'm very well, thanks. I had a good sleep when I eventually did drop off. I'm starting to have very vivid and strange dreams, sometimes I don't even recognise the people in them lol. It's like watching a film. I can barely remember them when I wake up, though.
On Saturday, I'm going back to my house for a few days, my mum is coming with meI'll be seeing a few friends as well while I'm there. Feeling a bit nervous about it, but it'll be fine, I'm sure.

Good for you Tay (you do know we are only 'having a go' coz we care, right?)
Also - you can always go into settings and switch wireless off before you go to bed. These leaves your alarm and any urgent calls still free to come through.
OR - radical thought - you could switch off your router overnight. I know a few people who do this because they believe it is bad for you to sleep bathed in invisible radio waves. I don't do that personally, as I think I'd have a panic attack if I knew I was SO disconnected from the outside world (addicted? Moi?) but I can see the reasoning.

You know, having suffered from insomnia for over 25 years and having tried every remedy known to man or beast with nothing working. I dont worry if I want to stay up late on occasion. My insomnia has got much better after a 6 month spell on anti depressants which are used to help treat insomnia even though Im off them now.
Valerian or anything herbal didnt work for me. You have to be careful with lavender as too much of it can keep you awake. Hot milk, counting sheep, relaxation tapes, forget it, didnt work for me, neither did exercise.
Nytol knocked me out but made me feel foggy so I didnt take it often.
I was shattered last night but stayed up late and then read books on my kindle till 2am, but I still slept. Im not someone who needs to stay up late every night, but even being in bed at 11am or a bit later works fine for me.
At times when my insomnia was at its worst, if I went to bed at 9pm, Id still have been awake at 1am, a routine would not have made a blind bit of difference to me.
Theres tapes you can buy, white noise or similar, its meant to help, there are some website you can buy those and other tapes which might help.0 -

None of the over the counter sleep aid pills work for me at all. Don't touch anything for me ever. Tbc, my insomnia has been really really awful in the past, my dad is insomniac too, and he says all the same things about routines and noise etc not working, but also admits for him the real problem is he needs noise to avoid being faced with his own thoughts. It's very sad. For me, the problem is not that, my mental health is thankfully robust, I am just insomniac.
. I can see why anti depressant a would really help when needed, and if they are then its fabulous we have that tool these days
(My health condition and the drugs for that actually makes me sleep a lot, and so I have this weird double life as someone who can sometimes hardly stay awake, yet at others cannot sleep):rotfl:. Exercise has never worked for me. Before I was I'll I was very very fit, and I found the best point at the day for me to seriously train was between three and four. I got consistently better results than in the morning but had enough time to 'come down' before the evening. I would also find going to bed at nine if I knew I was not going to sleep until one too much of a leap to take at once. I'd only go to bed at nine if I were planing to set my regular rise time at four thirty/five am. (If it did work you'd get over sleep which is no healthier) .. Nine would be an unrealistic start target IMO and would really stress me, especially if I were already suffering other stress. I might however start a 'wind down' at nine. So no vigorous exercise, but rather reading, a sedentary hobby, reading mse, (but not an excitable thread
) maybe watching something on tv, listening to music or even squeezing in a film (nothing that will keep me up all night though). For me personally week nights tempo changes at eight, now I rarely go out anyway.
I don't stop doing stuff, I just have a shower then change, marking 'mentally' then change into the evening.
Because I take complicated and fairly unpleasant drugs I have never wanted to take 'proper' sleeping pills as an adult, (though on occasions have, mainly when in patient) And so I really have committed myself to the 'sleep training'. It also helps that I have an interest in animal training, and believe myself no more special than my doggies. I also taught my cats to come in and sleep at night :rotfl:
Of course, nothing works for everyone, and very little works 100% of the time, no point having unrealistic ambitions! but tayforth is so very, very early on in her life development plan that she really doesn't need to throw her hands up in despair yet. I'd really stick at trying to get a good, enjoyable system for her and stick to it for three months and then see what about it is restrictive and what she thinks has surprised her in enjoyment. She has done so amazingly well from her own reserve of positive mental thinking that I think she might be just the sort of person who could succeed very well at this if she can get over the initial 'discomfort' of balancing application and letting go.

You lot are wonderful! And yes, I do know that you're only 'having a go' because you care. I'm incredibly touched that you care enough to post on my thread so often and offer help.
Right. Tasks for today: sort out my mum's toiletry stash (she's a terrible hoarder, and currently has enough bath and body products to last about ten years lol), and start getting stuff together for Saturday.Life is a gift... and I intend to make the most of mine :A

Tay, I have to confess that I am one of the lurkers. I have followed your thread since day one, I have no advice as my life is a bit of a mess. You have been so supportive on my thread I just wanted to come on and say I am routing for you. x0

Thanks very much, waccoe. I've been keeping up with your thread too, and am so pleased that you've felt able to open up to someone at long last. What a relief that must be for you. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a positive outcome for you.
Right - sorting out done. My mum is such a hoarder! We've had a busy time going through all her stuff, and laughed at some of the things she holds onto. A neighbour called in for a cuppa in the middle of it, so that was a nice distraction.
Also, my employer's welfare dept called and offered me counselling, which I am going to take them up on. I can do it by phone or in person. I did have a bit of a cry on the phone, but the lady was fine about it. As long as I can go into work and not break down I'll be ok!Life is a gift... and I intend to make the most of mine :A
