I use facebook constantly - but I think the last time I posted a status was about two years ago! I use it for news, for history stuff as I'm studying that at uni. I belong to a lot of facebook groups - political and historical as well as bands' pages but I really don't get why people post up pictures of their kids.....it seems to have changed recently - I was horrified to find that a picture that a family member had liked came up on my page last week - it was a picture of a stillborn baby!
So whilst I log in and check my groups, I've never ever looked at anyone's page. And I do not understand twitter in the slightest - the only example I can think is of Alan Sugar who seems to be quoted a lot in the press as having arguments on twitter?0 -
I confess I don't like Facebook. I have I think maybe 5 friends on Facebook and 2 of those are relatives. I ignore other friends requests. I'm not interested in sharing my life with people online.
However I'm nosy so like looking at pictures etc. Primarily I use it to interact with a Facebook group. I don't "like" all pictures. Some are posted as bragging rather than being particularly good pictures for another reason. Just because I've viewed them doesn't mean I like them! I have the app on my phone but don't get notifications except of messages.
Everyone uses technology differently and their expectations of what they will get from it are different so that alters how they react to others' posts.0 -
So, for those who use it, I am really interested in how you use it and why.
To keep in touch with friends and family.
To get news updates/contact activity groups for my kids e.g. ballet school.
To promote my blogs/websites.
To play CivWorld.
I use a few different social media sites. Facebook is personal. Twitter is... random and/or business. Linkedin is dead as a dodo. G+ is utterly random. I know some people who use other sites, e.g. Bebo, but I don't see the point. Facebook and Twitter are pretty much enough for me.0 -
Example: I will post 'husband has got a new job' or 'dog has died'.
I meet up with a friend the following week who asks me how I am. I say 'well my husband has got a new job and my dog has died'. Friend will then look sheepish and say 'Oh I am sorry, I didn't know that!' When they clearly did.
It might also be worth considering that some people hide specific people if they post a lot (and block up their feed with game info etc) or post things they don't agree with. I know a few people who I like a lot, but I've hidden their posts from time to time while they're going off on one at something in particular (usually politics!). I'm not saying that people have a reason to hide you, but it's something worth considering.
Also, I believe (although facebook is changing things all the time) if you don't regularly interact with people they are often not shown on your latest news page, so that could be another reason people are not acknowledging posts etc.0 -

I totally agree with you - I have over 500 friends on facebook, but a lot of them are work colleagues, or people who I interact with on historical websites, or university friends. My personal life is just that - I'd never ever take a picture of my cat, my cottage or compromise my security.
I learn a lot more through my facebook history pages than I have done in three years of university! I've also made some fantastic friends, have met them on historical visits,0 -
I have FB & Twitter & Google+.
I have a rule that I will not add any people I work with.
I rarely post on my wall & I don't use FB to share my photos on. My phone has (or 'had' until I removed it) a FB app that was never used.
If I want to keep in touch with family then they know my phone number & email address.
I use FB purely because the platform is used by so many companies for competitions. I don't play games & I have deliberately set my account up with the wrong DoB, address details & phone number due to the fact that 40% of FBer's are ID thieves out to steal such info for criminal intent.Never Knowingly Understood.

I have an account so I can keep an eye on my two young teenagers, that was part of the deal when they turned 13.
I have 5 friends, my two children, my OH, and my two sisters, and a very empty wall. Personally I don't 'get it', but then again I'm not a teenager with a social life!
I tried twitter, and I couldn't make sense of the tweets, it's all rather random.0 -
Yes, that's the kind of thing I am talking about.
There have been things in the past that I have posted.
These are normal, rational, educated people who just act odd about FB and pretend they haven't seen it.
It has given me a very different perspective on people!
That is odd but it is possible they haven't actually seen it.
The more friends you have, especially ones who post a lot of links etc, the faster your wall moves and you can easily miss big chunks by popping in once or twice a day.
Also, as someone has already said, you don't tend to see posts from people you don't interact with regularly unless you sort out the settings and a lot of people don't bother getting to grips with the settings.
That said, it is considered to be a teenage activity (someone on here has already made that comment!) so it's highly likely some people want to deny they use it when in certain circles. Why a friend would do that is beyond me though!
Your family are just plain rude for not acknowledging photos after specifically asking for them. I'd ask them if they've lost their manners. but that's just me.
Threads like this make me aware how much people read into likes and comments and I find that interesting!
I routinely like posts before I share them, as a 'thanks for posting' but it has never once occurred to me that I could be deleted if I don't!0 -
I use FB mostly for competitions and promotions, haven't posted a status in I don't remember how long. I have removed friends for posting racist or homophobic comments - they are entitled to their opinions/views but I don't want or need to see it on my "wall" - it does make you see people in a slightly different light!
I also detest cryptic comments designed to have people respond - if something/one has really hurt you or made you that angry deal with it in real life!
Maybe I'm just too old0
