Posting Messages saying' Don't bump the thread' when it wasnt bumped

I admit that I subscribe to the "if it's on the first page then it's not a bump" theory because that's how it's always been. I also don't see a problem with people bumping to say it's a dupe and then editing the post afterwards - they'd be posting anyway with the dupe link!
I find myself bumping comps every damned day - comps that are just about to end too - because there are so many daily comps that nobody bothers to add to the daily sticky.
I defy anyone to pull me up about that. A bump is nothing compared to the selfish nature of people who have entered and then could not be bothered to simply copy/paste a URL  It's not just newbies either! Checking the "thanks" shows plenty of people who should know better.
Also, if bumping annoys you so much that it interferes with your comping, just try another way. If you do it by end date you never see the bumps.

Also, I'd just like to add, if I find a comp that has ended early, I will bump to say so, example here

and I will always click expired, even if I don't say soThrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End
You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time0 -
I'm guilty of such conduct.There it is I confess:D
I can often recall a comp mentally & will post such whilst I get the link.If it is not a dupe I usually delete my post.
It just serves as a warning to others to hold off entering in the interim.I cannot see how it could cause offence to anyone but nothing on here will fail to make me wonder.
I'd rather you did post in those circumstances, it's better than risking entering again and disqualifying yourselfA strong man stands up for himself, a stronger man stands up for others.0 -

I do that too, it's a valid bump. I also ask anyone else who pops into the thread press expired too, that way it's moved to game over much fasterA strong man stands up for himself, a stronger man stands up for others.0 -

I've still not had my questioned answered from the beginning of this thread.
For the people that find bumping so irritating I am genuinely intrigued how you use/sort the forum to comp, as bumping doesn't affect me in the slightest.
I comp in a number of ways - mainly by going through the pages of the board (with the board in its default settings) until I catch up with where I last got to, or if I have time I move on to end date comping. The ticks and crosses help me assess if I've entered a comp. Also if I find a comp not working or it's one I want to come back to I subscribe to it. Likewise I do the same with dailies.
I know some people have mentioned that they will 'miss posts' if they get bumped? How? I can only surmise that you are sorting by thread start time perhaps? EDIT: Thinking about it, that can't be the case because a bump wouldn't affect that sort order? HHHmmmm? Still intrigued!
We all comp in different ways and no way is 'the right' way - and equally no particularly way should really dictate the way in which people post, as that's not fair either. I think what is simply forum 'etiquette' (i.e. to bump or not to bump) is being taken far too seriously.
Comping is supposed to be a fun, enjoyable hobby - it shouldn't be the case that people are getting irate about what are in fact trivial and petty matters!:T*Thanks to all who posts comps * :j0 -

When you click on the competitions forum the threads are automatically sorted by NEWEST POST.
You need sort by NEWEST THREAD and this will prevent you seeing any 'bumped' threads.
Never mind I've re read your post and you weren't asking how to avoid them:rotfl:The shinbone is a device for finding furniture in a dark room.:TBig thanks to all competition posters:T0 -

Perhaps the bump police should start sorting like this though?

Dear Brethren, Rules is rules. and they should be respected, but not adhered to like the letter of the law.
Let's see some grace extended to the bumpers (even though they are sinners
) but also respect for the rules and to other forum users, everyone navigates the boards in a different way.
For me, bumping is not a major issue, as I use the 'Newest Thread' button, but I don't expect everyone to do the same.
Respect.

Bumping can be annoying if for example you have subscribed to a thread to get notifications of a new post. For example when the next day answer is posted or in the case of the car comp when a new portal or a gold car is reported. If the thread is then bumped with chat you end up getting emails when you don't need to.
It is also annoying if there is a mix of good and bad bumps and you have to read through to check what you might need to know.
Still waiting for another example from op btw or was this just to have another go at Lucyone for the please don't bump posts?Rational judgement, now, at this very moment.
Virtuous action, now, at this very moment.
