just be afraid that in a couple of years when he gets out that he's not housed anywhere near you because who knows what he'll get up to next!

Very true. Though I sincerely hope it will be way longer than a couple of years that he is given.

I felt sick this morning when it was reported that the family and friends cheered in court when the verdict was given and Mick retorted arrogantly saying 'Its not over yet'

Hmmm actually I think he will find it is. I wouldn't rate his chances in prison, considering what he did to six beautiful children.

Does the judge pass sentence on them today?

It was called 'The Derby Fire: Secrets and Lies'
The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.

I sat there watching the Channel 5 and BBC 1 reports on this last night and my mouth was justing hanging open. Sickening. In some ways their relationship reminded me of fred and rose west, in terms of the sexual behaviour. Clearly there were extremely different patterns of behaviour between the two cases but the controlling/co-dependancy was eerily similar.

I do not feel sorry for the wife in anyway. She had a family support network, her sisters attempted to get her out of the situation and she refused. They even went round when mick was away and she refused. But notwithstanding this, the eldest boy's aunt said how when she took him out for something to eat it was very clear he hadn't been properly fed in ages, heartbreaking. The way those kids lived was child abuse plain and simple, and the wife was key in allowing it to happen.

Where was the social services in all this? I don't want to jump on the bandwagon of blame the govt. but given that at one point there were 11 kids, two women and mick living in the house and they were going on national tv bragging about it, surely it must have raised some alarm bells. Plus what about his criminal record of violence against women and when lisa left and the custody case that ensued, surely CPS must have been notified?

A lot of questions unanswered to my mind.

Any ideas on how long he can get for manslaughter?

BBC1 had a similar, immediately after the 10 pm news. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01s119h/Panorama_The_Derby_Fire_Secrets_and_Lies/

The guilty woman, Mairead, had extremely low self-esteem, as had most of the others who got involved with this man, although some - Lisa for instance - found enough bottle to get away. Lisa's action will have been the catalyst. A man like this cannot, absolutely cannot, tolerate this kind of rebellious behaviour from one of his subject females. Recall what happened to the young girl who ended a much earlier relationship and was stabbed as a result. Mick had to, had to be in control, and if he was not, as a the result of some positive behaviour on the part of a woman, there would - almost predictably - be tragic consequences. As Miss Widdecombe diagnosed 'all women are !!!!!es to him'. Yes, women exist only for his convenience and his pleasure, and to be manipulated to the extreme. Watching the body language during the trial was informative. He's also not the most intelligent of men, or he'd have known that petrol can be identified by type, and that a fire set just behind a uPVC front door can get out of control with uncontrollable speed. There would have been no chance of - as he maybe planned - rescuing the children one by one through a small back window. They would have been unconscious very quickly from smoke inhalation. If you've ever attended a fire lecture at work, you know this. Smoke kills - especially smoke from modern materials, man-made fibres etc - extremely quickly.

Absolutely right - if Mick had ever gone to work he would have know this! If this guy had been forced into a job then maybe being able to spend some time on her own might have given the wife some space to think about leaving. Clearly this is one of the reasons he didn't want to get a job.

The program that was on 4 earlier is worth trying to watch if its repeated. They had a series of psychologists speaking over the interview and explaining various things Mick did and said. The way he covered his face, wiped his head etc etc.
    .

Do you mean the Panorama one that was on at around 10.30pm or was there another earlier in the day?

But, I do think that it is perfectly possible that these incredibly stupid, arrogant, controlling and/or subjugated people did genuinely love the children who they killed when their evil plan went wrong.

I disagree, if they loved the children they would have been at the eldest boy's bedside.

I don't believe they meant to kill the kids though, if for no other reason than that their benefits would have dried up.
