Okay, so lets presume Mairead was truly under Micks control - I wonder would her lawyer not have tried that as a defence for her? It does seem plausible if only because so many folk here seem to think so. And there are lots of clever people here as we all know.:D

I would still like to throw a pitchfork at her mind you. :rotfl:

I thought they had tried that defence - to an extent. There are certainly enough snippets in the evidence which indicate that Mairead was controlled by Philpott

But, wouldn't the lawyers have needed Mairead's agreement to go all out for a 'he controlled me' defence?

So, she had been in that relationship for 12 years. It has been stated in court that there was violence in all of Mick Philpott's relationships. There was also control.

I believe the pair were remanded in custody after being charged with murder in May 2012. Could there have been enough time between May 2012 and the start of the trial for Mairead to take an objective look at her relationship, and break away from Philpott's control? Over ten years worth of control.

Maybe not. At the hearing in December 2012, the pair allegedly mouthed 'I love you' to each other by video link.

As far as I understand it, the defence have to give it all they've got in terms of putting up a defence. Without over-ruling their client's wishes.

I suspect that if Mairead had agreed to a defence which was based on a no-holds-barred account of control, then we would have seen that. And it would have received very clear back-up from the accounts of other witnesses. Plus the snippets which did make it through anyway.

If she didn't agree to that defence, then maybe she's not very good at calculated, self-serving, self-protection after all.

When you watch the press conference at the beginning, it's quite clear they are acting. Did you see the fleeting look she gave him? Almost laughing, as in "we did well, we've fooled them, I can't believe the idiots are believing us".

I know (hope, guess) that you and marisco are only joking.

Unfortunately, given the likelihood of an unruly mob actually turning up at the court tomorrow, maybe it's not the best type of joke to make on a public internet forum.

Marisco, you have probably been told this before but I love your sig, very powerful x

Awwww I have not been told that before actually, but thank you very much. Someone wrote it in a card to me years ago when I really needed to refocus and get myself together. It has been my positive mantra ever since.
The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.

Fortunately my work commitments (I have lives to save and all that kind of stuff) and the difficulty in sourcing pitchforks in this modern age have foiled any sort of unruly mob plan. You're right, there will be masses there already. Quite why people feel the need to turn up and shout abuse at a police transit van is beyond me. They are only lowering themselves to the level of the animals caged in the van.

Shame she didn't glance a little further to the left and clock the disbelieving look on the police officers face. He wasn't falling for any of it.

They revelled in that press conference. Sickening.

I'm very surprised. I might write it down and frame it if you wouldn't mind? I know that sounds strange to ask from a complete stranger but it is obviously personal to you (and I would feel strange if I didn't ask you) and I think it is a lovely sentiment to reflect on.

I agree and it gives them far to much attention and importance which those two crave.
