Prom dress done. DD ordered a few online from Asos and one is a big wow (and with me as I used her student discount)! She had shoes in her wardrobe which she declared perfect - mainly because from her going out shoes they are comfy and the fact they match is a bonus!!!

She's not going for a fake tan as she's embraced her whiteness so I offered to pay for her hairdo and a taxi home. So I'm getting off lightly. Is this it for proms now or do they have them at Uni?

I've heard of some weird reasons for not getting married but this is the best so far :)

Many women don't take their husband's surnames nowadays y'know

YOU think marriage is outdated.....but surely expecting your children to hold exactly the same views as you is equally outdated ?

I don't expect them too, I allow them to think lol... DD1 said she is not marrying him because of that reason and I totally see her point, we have discussed her keeping her name and she said so what is the point of getting married then?.. fair point! She said they would do a will each it is cheaper than getting married and her OHs family are welcome to have all his rubbish if he croaks.. at least 1 is sensible-ish!

I don't mind if they do share my views, and I think it opens lines of communication and opens conversations if we have differing thoughts on things which is great.. that means I have done an even better job than I thought... I have given them the confidence to form their own opinions and back them up with evidence and arguments and reasons for their beliefs.. that is a lot more than the tabloid reading dingdongs show when they spout the Daily Fail!

You don't even want to hear DS1's views.. he is rather strong minded about it.. lol

Neice didn't. However she had to pay for (limited) tickets for her Graduation and wasn't going to have the photo due to cost, her Mum had recently lost her job so couldn't afford them, her Dad didn't offer so Mr S stepped in for her.

They sometimes have balls at uni

I went to summer one, though i think there were others during the year.

I was lucky in that my ex paid for my dress and hair do :D

Didn't cost as much as graduation tough

Marriage brings a lot of rights with it and it is the cheapest way to get them all. If your daughter has no problem being prevented from visiting her OH if he is unconscious in hospital, and doesn't mind having absolutely no say on his treatment (even if they've been together for decades), then she's right not to even consider marriage.

It was always a "dinner dance" at my school up until the year I left and it magically turned into a "prom" after that. I left in 5th year (Scotland) so didn't get to go as it was for 6th years only, can't say I'm all that fussed on it.

I'm a little bemused by the "Why get married then?" comment to not changing your name though. I understand that some people don't want to/feel the need to get married but I think it's a bit unfair to say that it has no more meaning than a name change.
  • My son is in year 11 & his school hold their prom at a football club 50 mins drive from our town. I'm sure they also have a college leavers ball for year 13 & if follows on to uni there will be graduation costs too... His sister is 3 years younger so will have to repeat this all for her.

Being our first time through all this I have no idea what he should wear. He is clueless, no interest in fashion & his friends have sorted their transport leaving him out so does he a lift off mum & dad or do we go to the expense of hiring something just for him, sports car or campervan maybe, but no idea what & we can't spend loads either. Ideas from parents who've been through this before welcome.

At DD Y11 a couple of years ago there was a mix of boys in normal suits & hired suits with cravats. Some wore converse shoes to dress it down. Transport - most go in groups of friends to arrive together but many left it till last minute and some came by taxi. Most were picked up by parents.

Y13 prom is more informal as they are 18 and go into Town afterwards. Boys wear shirt and tie and girls short dressy dresses but not OT i.e. high street/ASOS dresses.

My youngest is in Y11 and their leavers do is smart attire, but they have to go on the coach and return on the coach or they cannot attend. I am in favour of that it stops all that one up manship with limos etc.

I wish DD school had sorted out coaches but they would have needed 5 or 6 of them. As it was DD went in a 14 seater limo about a mile down the road!!! This time no limos so probably lifts off parents and then coaches to take them less a mile into town at midnight!
