then what is the point of getting married? You can just live together and spend your money on something worthwhile!

I don't even know where to start with that.

Getting married is not just an OTT way to change your surname, you can do that for free.

A marriage certificate is a pretty powerful legal contract, conferring many important rights to both partners who enter into it, and it only needs to cost about £150.

Would you marry someone if your name would then be Lily Lill???

I don't think the exwife thing is the same any more.. OH's family would inherit if he died as our children are still very young and my children would inherit if I did.. we don't need to be married.

You don't have to change your name when you get married. Lots of professional women don't now a days.

Marriage is quite different to deed poll.

Words failed me also, I found it a bizarre attitude.

People are entirely free to think marriage is unnecessary but to think its the same as deed poll....

I'm quite pleased my daughter's school don't have a Leavers Prom. I think it's lovely to mark the occasion and celebrate, but I have yet to see a 'classy' prom dress, regardless of the cost. I dislike the general styles and dress fabrics.

I also wouldn't spend some of the prices mentioned on this thread. £100 buys a lovely outfit, even for children from affluent homes and attending expensive schools. I'm a few years off though, so maybe I'm deluded!

I feel marriage is a completely archaic practice and totally outdated.. noone needs to 'own' anyone any more we can be freeeeeeeee :D

I got married so i could get rid of my boring surname.. which is the only benefit it ever had.. the downside far outweighs the positives from my experience.

Well they had started around here down south by 1998, mine was in 2000 that was a good night!
I had a dress which cost £125, already had the shoes and done my own hair and makeup. We didn't have a limo either which i kind of regretted as everyone else did!
I don't think they are a waste if it's a one off event and important to a teen imo. I compare that night in honesty with my wedding too. It's the only 2 occasions where i could dress up in a a lovely gown and feel like a princess lol
I've got a lovely pic of me and my younger brother before i left as my mum forced him to dress up too for some photos.
Thats prompted me to have a look and see if someone from our year has got a group photo-time to get hold of some old friends i think.

If you only got married to change your surname, did it last?

Deed poll would be much more suitable for a name change.

Just bought DDs dress today- she has steam punk stuff but not got the cOnfidence to wear it to prom. Dress came from an alternative shop, gorgeous black satin, she looks amazing in it, £37.50. Shoes and bag that she had for her brothers wedding last year. She doesn't like fakery so no tan or talons, just a hair appt and done! Yay! :-)

This is what my daughter did for her yr11 prom last year. We found her dress at an alternative shop for £38. Its a rockabilly style dress and the fabric is black background with red roses and skulls on it. With her pale skin and red lipstick, blonde hair put up at the hairdressers with a real rose from the garden as an accessory and painted red nails - she looked amazing :T

Did you get a fake tan? They seem to be de rigueur these days.

Most of her friends didn't.......but a lot of the girls did!

I don't feel owned and know that I will never own anyone else. We only 'own' ourselves and even that's debatable if you're remotely religious.

Marriage is a formal sign of life long commitment to most/many people. It has nothing to do with expensive weddings, names or anyone else outside the marriage. It's a shame you didn't experience its benefits, although I am sure you are far from alone in that. I'm not sure it could be described as being archaic, since monogamy isn't a traditional practice.
