It's almost prom time!

I can tell becasue lots of parents are starting to try to sell their DD dress from last year.

I'm amazed at parents spending hundreds of pounds on big flouncy frocks never to be worn again. I love looking at the pictures they attach to the ads in work and wondering which mirror they looked in when they bought it!

DD has senior prom this year and as they are all 18 (well most are) she says it's just a slightly nicer than normal going out dress! So little fabric in going out dress should only cost me a fiver:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

For Y11 prom she had her hair & make up done, a manicure, pedicure and fake tan. It was our treat for her as she had worked so hard in the preceding months in preparation for her GCSEs and we knew it was something she would love as she enjoys painting her nails and had never had a fake tan.

Her dress was fabulous and customised by her so that no one would have exactly the same dress. Her gorgeous silver shoes were a bargain at £15.

She knows the value of money. She knows we would not spend hundreds of pounds on a frock for one night.

Many of the girls at DD proms were in bargain dress and proud of it whether it came from Ebay or H&M but some had dresses made by costume designers which cost almost £500!

The dress code for my DS's Leavers Ball is 'formal' so he has found a steam punk ensemble on the internet that would set me back £370. Absolutely no way will he get it though I have found a nice steam punk jacket on ebay that he can have. The last time I bought him school trousers they came as a set of two so, as it was so close to him leaving school, I've set one pair aside so they'll still be smart/new for the Leaver's Ball.

I think my sister paid a few hundred pounds for my niece's dress (my other sister, not her mum, who couldn't afford it).

    More money than sense IMO.

    Glad I don't have kids!

My daughters dress was £375.. you'd spend more on a wedding dress or most would and she is never getting married (esp to her current partner whose surname is the same as her first name bar 1 letter!). She didn't have a silly limo or anything and she got so little it was one expense i was happy to fork out for.. DD2 prom this year and she hasn't yet mentioned a dress.. I have the money put by!!! I have 4 years to save for the next prom :p

I think I ended up spending about £200 on the boys and DD1's was £525 with everything in.. shoes, hair, jewellry, dress, etc

    Wow £500 on one night!!!!

DD dress was £50 from TKmax plus the cost of swarovski crystals and hot fix wand of £35 and £15 to get the dress taken in (A bargain I thought as the dress was boned).

Shoes £15, handbad she bought herself.

Manicure, pedicure and fake tan £35, hair £20, makeup £10. Limo was £11 each.

We could have afforded to spend more but chose not to. Instead we gave DD a lump sum when she passed her GCSE

What was wrong with the school disco? You used to turn up in jeans and a t shirt and the only expense was a 2 litre bottle of cider to drink behind the bike sheds before going in! lol.

I'll bet we had just as much fun, if not more, than they do nowadays.

Ooh no drinking now which I think is a bit mean. Any young person turning up at prom that shows a hint of intoxication is promptly sent home. Many change into "normal" clothes for after prom party!

They never have school discos now which I think is a shame but they are seen as naff! Instead nightclubs in town have 13-17 year old evenings! It's full of drunk 13 year olds! No self respecting 17 year old would dare go!
