I was born exactly 51 weeks after my husband, so for his 40th and my 39th we went to Florida with the kids incorporating both dates. On my 40th a year later, we went to an expensive restaurant.

Ive not been to Iceland but I understand that it is beautiful. The land of fire and ice, sounds like a wicked place to visit.
The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.

Sounds fantastic. I had a lovely holiday in Florida celebrating my 30th, a few days in Orlando and then onto St Petes.

  • I will be 40 later this year, and I am planning a big party with all my friends and family.

I can't wait, like you Marisco, the last few years have been pants, so I'm looking to my 40's for a new start and time for me :-)

Nothng. I was working 200 miles from home and even if I''d been at home I'd have done nothing. You need somebody/people to do stuff with really. Didn't do anything for my 18th, 21st, 30th, 40th or 50th. Nobody's ever interested in doing anything with/for me so they slide by.

    That's not true that !
You know i fancy the pants off you Pastures.

What did i do on my 40th ? I can't even remember what i did yesterday, how do you expect me to remember all that way back.

    I hated turning 30 - that was when I first realised I wasn't a young thing anymore
I felt the same about turning 40. I got quite depressed :( I am glad the OP is happy about her approaching birthday and is feeling more positive!

I've just been reading a travelogue book written by someone who spent a year in Iceland, mainly in Rejkjavik. It's a fascinating place by the sounds of it. I would love to see the Northern Lights. I recommend going in the summer months, when the sun hardly sets. In winter the sun doesn't rise till about 11 am and sets again by 2pm, which sounds a bit of a gloomy prospect!

We were in Barcelona, and rode around on the tourist bus all day. Although it was November it was nice and warm.

I went to Australia and climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge on my 40th, followed by dinner at Quay (supposedly the best restaurant in Australia), then flew to Melbourne to watch the Australian Grand Prix.

Expensive? Hugely, but was the only proper holiday we had over a 3 year period.

    Worth every penny? Absolutely :)
