• I have got my Nokia 6280 unlocked (locked to three network) from a shop for £15. I am using O2 sim in it. After getting my phone unlocked, my phone automatically gets switched off after 5-20 minutes when I am listening to Media Player. I never had this problem before. This phone is only a year old. I used to constantly listen to Media player for 2 hours when I was using 3 sim and my phone was locked. This is so annoying. Also, everytime I want to make phone call/sms, I have to restart my phone. My phone has no netowork all the time now, but when I restart, it works fine.

I can see something called PTT in the menu. This was definitely not there before. I tried taking it back to the unlock shop, but he is not helpful at all. I cant afford to buy a new phone. Can anybody please help?

Thanks,
Tony
• I have had real problems trying to use Dejan's software, and having learnt a lot wanted to share my experience in the hope that it may help others avoid the mistakes I made:

1. The DKU-5 cable. This is a cable which has a USB connector at one end and a Nokia Pop-Port connector at the other. The USB plug is longer than normal as it contains a USB to Serial convertor. This emulates a COM port, so that software on your PC can write to a Virtual COM port and the phone sees serial Nokia ‘FBUS’ signals. This is required by Dejan’s software, and is why straight USB to USB cables (CA-53 etc.) will NOT work. I found that several supposed DKU-5 cables didn’t work either. Get yourself a decent DKU-5 cable. I finally used a cable from http://wankaman.freewebhostingpro.com/DKU5%20cable%20for%20sale.html that cost £6.50p. There is some software called DSS.EXE at http://www.fonefunshop.co.uk/Unlocking/unlock/bb5counterresetbuy.htm that you can use to independently verify if your DKU-5 connection is working, simply by checking if you can (a) see DKU-5 as a valid type of connection and (b) ‘Read Info’ from the phone. Note also that the number of pins that appear to be connected at the Pop-Port doesn’t really matter, contrary to what some posters have suggested. Only pins 6, 7 & 8 are actually used by the cable.

2. N70 problems. I found that my N70 only seemed to want to communicate via the DKU-5 if I power cycled it (turned it off and on). If you can’t reliably read from the phone using DSS.EXE, then don’t try to use Dejan’s software. You can also experiment with this to check when in the power cycle the phone can be accessed. It almost seems as if something times out following the power-on cycle unless you are accessing the phone via FBUS on a regular basis, so as soon as you turn on the phone, check ‘Read Info’ is working, and then run through Dejan’s software without long pauses, then everything should work. If it goes wrong at any point, power cycle the phone and continue from where you left off.

3. I found the instructions for Dejan’s software slightly misleading. I would suggest carrying out the following steps:
• Make sure you have edited the BB5_UNLOCKER.CFG file in the Logs directory to reflect the correct Com port that is being emulated (it should be the same as the one DSS.EXE reports). It doesn't matter what editor you use, contrary to what some posters have implied.
• Read Phone. You should see the Phone’s SP Lock status
• Make Log. This creates two new files; ‘IMEI’.BB5 in the Backup directory and ‘IMEI’.LOG in the Logs directory. Make SURE you save a copy of the ‘IMEI’.BB5 in the Backup directory generated the first time you press 'Make Log' elsewhere, as this is a copy of the key Service Provider (SP) Lock data that can be restored by “WR Backup” if something goes wrong. I pressed ‘Make Log’ twice in a row by mistake, and ended up with a corrupted phone and corrupted ‘IMEI’.BB5 file, which meant I had a serious problem. This is because the logging process invoked by ‘Make Log’ can cause corruption in the phone, hence why you MUST save a copy of the backup ‘IMEI’.BB5 file.
4. I managed to get my phone in a corrupted state as I explained above, with an 'SP Data Corrupt' error and the SP Lock data set to FFFFs. The ONLY way to get around this is to either restore or recreate the original operator's SP lock data. Without having a valid backup to restore, I needed to recreate this. I used the fonefunshop service (whose URL is above) to do this. I had to run the DSS.EXE utility, and use it to read a 'IMEI'.ASK file from the phone. I then paid fonefunshop £20, sent them the ‘IMEI’.ASK file, they sent me back an ’IMEI’.RPL file, which using DSS.EXE I sent to the phone and restored my original SP lock. Although having to pay £20 was unwelcome, it was much cheaper than what a Nokia service centre wanted to charge me, and from other posts I have read some of these seem to have made things worse. Armed with the knowledge gained above, I was able to run through Dejan’s software again. When I clicked ‘SP Unlock’, I received an error message saying that ‘IMEI’.PSW file didn’t exist. I thought that the BB5_CALC.EXE utility would automatically be run to create the unlock data that gets written to the phone, but that wasn’t the case. I had to run BB5_CALC.EXE manually, which used the 'IMEI'.LOG file to create the 'IMEI'.PSW file that Dejan's software writes back to the phone. Having done this I pressed ‘SP Unlock’ again, and it all worked. I have finally removed the operator lock from my phone.

Just to clarify these remaining steps in the unlocking process:
• Once you have created the 'IMEI'.LOG file as above using 'Make Log', you need to run BB5_CALC.EXE. You can run this any way you like (using the Run command, from Explorer or from the Command Line). The software knows where to find the input file 'IMEI'.LOG and save the output file 'IMEI'.PSW within its directory structure.
• You then simply press 'SP Unlock', which will write the data in the 'IMEI'.PSW file to the phone, which removes the operator's SP lock.
The SP Lock information is stored somewhere that is not overwritten when updating the phone firmware, so if your phone SP Data has been corrupted then trying to update the firmware will not solve the problem. If for some reason you don't have a valid 'IMEI'.BB5 backup stored safely, then the ONLY was to recover is to go through the ASK/RPL file process to restore the original Operator SP Lock data, and then run Dejan's software again. There is a utility mentioned in various BBs called the SP Data Restorer, but all this does is take a copy of the original 'IMEI'.BB5 file as described above, and it didn't seem that useful to me. It is relying on Dejan's software to create the 'IMEI'.BB5 in the first place, and simply copying elsewhere.

Hope this post helps other people who have struggled like me. Just remember to keep a COPY of the 'IMEI'.BB5 created the very first time you press 'Make Log', and ONLY press it once. If things do go wrong, then copy this file to the Backup directory and press 'WR Backup' to restore the original SP Lock data.

• Hi Guys,

I have purchased a DKU-2 cable for my Nokia N70 from ebay as recommended in a few previous posts.

However I cannot get the cable to appear in the Port (Com & LPT) section of the device manger? (The cable seems to be working fine as I can connect to Nokia pc suit via my mobile?)

I’m guessing I am missing some drivers or something? The cable came with a CD but the drivers seem to be from Nokia PC Suite? I have installed them without success?

Can anybody tell me what I need to do or download in order to get my cable to appear in the Port (Com & LPT) section?

Thanks for your help

not for free as i think the 6280 needs a testpoint unlock (ie. taking apart the phone).

any shop with a nokia bb5 unlock box should be able to unlock it for you

• I need a dku-5 cable with the full 13 or so pins, and ebay is generally the cheapest for this, does nyone know of a seller whos cables are guaranteed to have all the pins?

Thanks in advance
• Due to the current problems with threads I'm copying Browntoa's first post here meantime...

thanks to Richard for pointing this out to me, all the information plus a link to the software in the first post of the unlock Nokia thread

http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/....html?t=383930

all you need is the free software and a Nokia DKU5 (USB) cable which is often supplied with these phones.

I'd like to point out that this software was freely released by the creator Dejan and was reverse engineered (not hacked Nokia software but written from scratch) so as far as I'm aware it's 100% legal, it is legal to remove Network Locks from phones in the UK.

As pointed out below if this is used on the INCORRECT models not listed you will damage the sim lock data

This unlocker only works on the handsets listed below.

6630
6681
6680
N70
N71
N90
N91

ps, stop sending me messages asking for help, I have not used the software...I will delete them without replying.

If you read through the thread there are pointers to identifying the correct cable and also a link to a guide on how to remove the Network Branding from the phone as well.At least one person has now confirmed this works.

got this from post 76... thank you to g33za..it includes important information about why you should back up the phone !!

OMG! YES I finally done it!

And it was very much a difficult procedure and for those about to try it please read this before possibily semi-bricking your phone.
• I have a Nokia 6680 with 3 branding and locked to 3. v4.04 firmware
• I used this dku-5 (clone/3rd party) cable:http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/USB-DATA-CABLE...QQcmdZViewItem
• Original Nokia DKU-2, CA-53 and DKU-5 (6 pin version) do not work, confirmed by me! I havent a DKU-5 (full set).
I installed the dku-5 clone drivers etc and it picked up the cable and assigned a com port to it. I read the phone, it showed the info blah blah and wrote the backup file in the associated backup folder (this is important).

Tried the make log and it gave an sp error and the phone rebooted.. tried again something about unable to save log... at this point i copied the backup file from the backup folder to a completely different location (just in case). I tried a few more times and (probably my fault) i ended up getting SP Data IS corrupted error.

At this point my phone started showing contact retailer message!!!! [Panic starts coming in]... a quick google shows same errors experienced by other on the gsm forums and solutions pointing to either Phone back to Nokia Service centre or trying the backup file.

Now in the process of messing about with the phone (just want it unlocked) the backup file was overwritten by the now corrupt sp data so even the WR Backup function wasn't working. Putting the original 3 sim card in would bring up unvalid sim card error!!

This was all yesterday evening... at which point I left it thinking damn i'm gonna have to send back to the service centre and pay £20 quid or whatever it'll cost. This morning I remember I had the other backup I copied earlier, i checked the file contents and they were different.. so I copied the original back and did WR Backup, and the phone was restored (athough back to locked state). Tried reading phone again... reads fine, make log... error... then redid the WR Backup... all fine, Make log... successful!! did the calc.. success and finally unlock... success!!

What a relief!! and following that I also managed to debrand the phone too so now on firmware 5.04 with no crappy 3 branding and fully unlocked.. yes

In summary, READ PHONE, then copy the <imei>.bb5 file in the backup folder somewhere else as your original backup and possible overwrites from corrupted backups. It saved me from a semi-bricked phone.

Make sure you have installed the drivers and under device manager it has a com port between 1 and 9.

Instructions:
1. Connect DKU-5 or normal COM cable to computer
2. Set proper COM cable port (must be, between 1 and 9)
3. Download unlocker, run `install.bat`
4. Open file c:/bb5_unlocker/logs/bb5_unlocker.cfg (Open this with notepad) and enter here proper COM port (1-9)
5. Run c:/bb5 unlocker/BB5logunlocker.exe (looking at the video posted this part is done in a dos window,Start, then ALL Programs, then Accessories, then Command prompt and then run the program direct from the directory, not from windows)
6. Click READ PHONE
7. Click MAKE LOG, log will be created
8. Enter codes to phone (in /psw/ dir), or
9. Click SP UNLOCK to enter codes via FBUS
