Well, this is the most entertaining site I have seen for ages!

I can't remember when I have laughed as much!

Seriously, it does give an insight into the heavily advertised areas of various countries.

A friend of mine has booked a fortnight in Sunny Beach this year, doesn't look good!

Ever since I was stuck for 14 nights in Fort William in a caravan 40 years ago with friends who did not want to come home early, I have avoided spending two weeks anywhere in one place, apart from Florida where there is so much to do.

Those people who criticise cruise holidays are misinformed, there is no better way to see possible future holiday destinations then to visit for a day and then go somewhere else!

Do please keep the comments coming, though, great reading!

    Regards

    Colmil.

Sousse in Tunisia, we went there on our honeymoon about 37 years ago, it was hell, nice looking hotel, but the food was horrible and so were the employees. Still, it was a loooooooooong time ago, but I still wouldn't be returning.
  • I've never understood the attraction of it either.
If I wanted to be surrounded by chavs I'd go to the Costas - at least there I wouldn't also be surrounded by Arabs who consider you an infidel and a likely terrorist target.
Maybe that's why it's so cheap.
Cheap?! hardly cheap if you are looking at the decent hotels.
That is also an unfair thing to say about the Arabs. Certainly the ones working in Sharm are very genuine and love the British.
Okay so some parts of Sharm are not great such as Naama Bay but for those who hate the hassle of Naama Bay, there will always be someone who loves the vibrancy of it.
What Egypt does have that most other places within a similar flight time don't have is a multitude of facinating history, pretty much guaranteed heat and sunshine, friendly people, and best of all, amazing diving and snorkelling. There is a whole new world down there and coming face to face with huge colourful fish is simply breathtaking.
Worst place i've been? Probably Cuba but thats my own fault for picking a time of year when it was rainy. Although the horendous stomach problem i picked up was nothing to do with the weather...

It has fantastic diving & snorkling, the best med haul weather/sea/snorkling/diving from the UK by far.

If you go to one of the better hotels, Reef Oasis Blue Bay, Sensatori, its not full of chavs.

I've been there a few times, never seen many chavs, a lot of Italians, but not many chavs, I guess it depends where you stay.....

It is expensive. We can only afford it because have family there and stay with them so it's not really like a full holiday experience as it still involves trips to the supermarket, occasionally picking kids up from school etc. We also borrow bicycles, cars and boats which is another significant saving.

Like you we looked for something like the Travelodge, Motel6 or Vagabond etc. but we couldn't find anything, at least, not in Western Australia. There are B&B's though, although they are not particularly cheap.

Eating and drinking out is very expensive by UK standards. The first time we were there I bought a round of drinks in a fairly normal pub. A half of cider, a half and a pint of beer came to over £20. More than twice what I'd pay at home. Meals come at a similar premium.

On the up side, petrol is relatively cheap, although you need lots of it. Trains and buses/coaches do exist. Local fares are quite reasonable but I've never done a long distance.

We are off again later in the year and are planning some longer trips while we are there. We are seriously considering camping as an affordable solution to the accommodation problem.

From what I have heard, the high Australian dollar has hit their tourist industry. When we were there last year, some firms offering boat trips and similar touristy activities were cutting prices in an effort to attract business. Tourists are still visiting Australia but they are spending a lot less (in Aus$) when they get there.

Just back from perth two days ago. Can confirm very expensive. Bottle of lager 9 dollars approx £6. Wanted to have a go at paddle boarding - lesson and board one hour. 100dollars , approx £66 so didn't bother. Rotteness island ferry about twelve miles to the island. 78 dollars, approx £50, I thought I was buying a share in the boat! Added to that the cost of bike hire for four of us equalled a very expensive day out to pedal round an island, pretty beaches tho. Trip was cheaper as was staying with sister. Loaf of bread about £3.30. After saying that did enjoy the holiday.

  • Very enjoyable and useful thread this! There seems to be a lot of consensus about quite a few places and a lot of the comments match up with my own experiences. Just to add my bits:

Turkey - agree about the hassle but it didn't bother me that much. Boat trips are fantastic and very much enjoyed local food.
Sharm - wonderful snorkelling but the hassle exceeded even that of Turkey. It took ages to cross the road because every time we stood by the kerb, 2, 3 or 4 taxis would pull up to try to persuade you in. My daughter (about 15 at the time) was so disturbed by it that we tended just to stay in the hotel.
Majorca - just a bit dull. Food, scenery and attractions all fairly uninspiring.
Naples - avoid like the plague. Still makes my skin crawl just thinking about it.
Amsterdam - plenty of interesting things to see but you can forget about seeing any of them. It's so busy there are queues around the block for everything.
  • We went to Sharm for the snorkelling, unfortunately the shark incident happened and there was a ban on entering the water. The only good thing about the holiday was the weather in december and the afternoon ice cream!

    Definitely won't ever return!
