Where are the worst places you've been on holiday?

I haven't had any real disasters but was disappointed with Evia (in comparison to other Greek Islands). It just didn't inspire me at all, perhaps partly because we were very unlucky with the weather. It was windy and wet for a lot of the week.0

I can't say that I've ever had a really bad holiday to be honest. I've lived and worked in various places around the world and consequently, I think my standards are lower than they used to be. We have just come back from an Easter break in Cairo, Luxor & Aswan in Egypt, which was fantastic, if a bit hot. Friendly people, amazing sights, decent food.
Worst place I found myself in was Newark in the USA. Absolutely rubbish; awful weather, nothing to see, abysmal food, horrible people. Luckily I was only passing through for a few days and I tried my best to find some redeeming features of the place, but it was an epic fail.Remember Occam's Razor - the simplest explanation is usually the right one.

Gambia. I was in tears by about day 4 and having to brace myself for the non stop hassle from the 'bumsters' every time we left the hotel. Not many places I would say 'never' again too abroad, in fact this is the only one!.
I have read with interest other's comments and have to say I loved Turkey! We went to Olu Deniz and had no hassle at all and the resort was lovely.
Only once have I thought about leaving a holiday early and that was due to being ill and with a couple of friends who turned out to be right bi***es and were horrid to me the whole time! I think i would tough it out wherever I was - usually a few days trips can lead you to seeing other parts of the country that aren't so bad and throw up some pleasant surprises.0 -
I've done a lot of travelling, mostly in Europe and there are relatively few places I didn't like; Brussels was a bit boring, but the rest of Belgium I liked a lot, didn't enjoy Majorca, Paris was a bit dirty and the people were so rude - and I speak French and have never had an issue with French people anywhere else in France. Not sure about Montreal and I've been twice. Couldn't really get to grips with LA - I think the hugeness and the stress of driving really got to me and put me off exploring as much as I usually do. Love Croatia, Slovenia, Germany, the rest of Canada and California and most cities I've been to. Most want to go to Norwegian Fjords, maritime Canada, Chile and Bolivia and more of Switzerland. British party groups go to Spain, Australian party groups go to Bali. It's the Asian Magaluf with nicer beaches. What is it actually like once there? Are the costs still astronomically and prohibitively high? I asked my friend for a chain like Travelodge and he said there was none?
I've just been to Australia and it's probably the most expensive country I've ever been to. It is possible to get cheapish places to stay but it'll be mainly motels. Food is extremely expensive, expect to pay twice the price compared to the UK. I do think it's mainly to do with the rubbish pound compared to the strong dollar at the moment though. Great place though.
I've been to a lot of places named on this thread and quite enjoyed them. I thought Sharm was great, although it's really diving focused (I have a licence) and enjoyed Miami, although the outskirts are rough.
Never really had a bad holiday to be honest. The worst place I've been to is probably Tunisia as it was very resort based, although we didn't travel much so I'm sure there are nice spots.
Marrakech was a mixed experience for me as well. In terms of culture it was awesome, although I'm fairly well travelled so I probably except some things easier than others. The food was great. Our hotel was signposted by a bunch of shagging cats but it's all part of the experience. The downside for me was the sales people in the main square. I've been to several nearby countries (Egypt and Jordan for example) but no where were they as aggressive as this. People were physically grabbing us, someone literally threw a very angry looking monkey at me and then demanded money and my friend was pushed around by several. It's the only time I've ever needed to get physically aggressive with someone on holiday. However the rest of the country we went to (Casablanca and Imlil) was awesome.0 -
Calella on the Costa Brava. It was our first holiday after leaving uni and we went cheap and cheerful, it was rotten. Location wasn't sooooo bad I guess but it seemed that the locals tarred everyone with the same 'fry up eating' brush. We went to a lovely little restaurant where everyone (local) were eating amazing looking tapas, we sat down and were handed laminated menus with pizza on them. We left.
The saving grace is that my old flatmade was living/from Barcelona so we went down to meet her and she took us to some fantastic hidden restuarants and places so it made the holiday.0 -
Egypt, Sharm el Sheikh.
Only holiday I've wished I could be home from after about day 4!
Weather is amazing, everything else, horrendous!0 -
I've always tried to make the best of all my holidays even when the weather/accommodation etc have not been great. I love just being away and trying different foods etc.
The one place I absolutely hated was Glasgow. It didn't help that it poured with rain and was very windy the 4 days I was there. The buildings are all so dark and miserable looking, the people weren't very friendly. Me and OH got to the airport 5 hours early because we just wanted to leave only to find that the strong winds meant flights were delayed or even cancelled. When I thought our flight had been cancelled I cried - it did go in the end 2 hours late. The world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0 -

I've never understood the attraction of it either.
If I wanted to be surrounded by chavs I'd go to the Costas - at least there I wouldn't also be surrounded by Arabs who consider you an infidel and a likely terrorist target.
Maybe that's why it's so cheap.;)0 -
Surely it's all a matter of taste, cost and expectations? If I pay £99 on a holiday, I'm not going to expect chocolates on the pillow, towels twisted into swans and rose petals on the bed sheets (NEVER understood that one).
I always giggle when I read why people hated particular hotels or resorts as it tends to accord with particular national stereotypes - with British tourists it's usually the lack of entertainment, or the lack of a kettle in the room, or British channels on the telly (just how much time do you actually spend in your room?). With the Spanish, they're obsessed with parking free at the hotel (usually under) and kick off big style if they have to pay, or have to park a street away. With Germans or French, it's usually noise, or with Germans, the fact that breakfast only had 10 different sorts of bread ("breakfast very poor").
Poorest place I ever stayed in was Apartments Leo in Puerto Pollenca in Mallorca - €90 a night for an apartment with ants, cockroaches and uncomfortable single beds ( I ended up kipping on the couch) -the owners were unfriendly and contemptuous (and British, sadly). This came after spending €45 a night in Palma itself on a gorgeous Spanish-run 3 star hotel that included a buffet breakfast for 2, and was miles from Palma Nova and Magalluf, but close to Palma itself, with amazing views across the bay, AND a massive pool.0
