Well. There was Aberystwth one August when I was 18 and went away with my parents summer church camp......
But even that was trumped by the Egyptian cruise. Rubbish boat. Husband, who normally has indestructible digestion, decided to eat everything put before him. This led, when the boat moored by one temple, to him simply opening the toilet door and viewing the sights from the throne! He was ill for a month when we got back.
Currently spending a month in Australia which I can't recommend highly enough. Its 24 degrees in Adelaide. Jealous?:D0 -

I was looking at spending a few weeks in Australia this year, staying with friends in Melbourne and then making our way up to the Gold Coast.
Hotels were minimum £80 per night (1 + 2) and car hire around £500 a week with buses being expensive and trains non existent costs to get around were sky high.
What is it actually like once there? Are the costs still astronomically and prohibitively high? I asked my friend for a chain like Travelodge and he said there was none?0 -

It is expensive. We can only afford it because have family there and stay with them so it's not really like a full holiday experience as it still involves trips to the supermarket, occasionally picking kids up from school etc. We also borrow bicycles, cars and boats which is another significant saving.
Like you we looked for something like the Travelodge, Motel6 or Vagabond etc. but we couldn't find anything, at least, not in Western Australia. There are B&B's though, although they are not particularly cheap.
Eating and drinking out is very expensive by UK standards. The first time we were there I bought a round of drinks in a fairly normal pub. A half of cider, a half and a pint of beer came to over £20. More than twice what I'd pay at home. Meals come at a similar premium.
On the up side, petrol is relatively cheap, although you need lots of it. Trains and buses/coaches do exist. Local fares are quite reasonable but I've never done a long distance.
We are off again later in the year and are planning some longer trips while we are there. We are seriously considering camping as an affordable solution to the accommodation problem.
From what I have heard, the high Australian dollar has hit their tourist industry. When we were there last year, some firms offering boat trips and similar touristy activities were cutting prices in an effort to attract business. Tourists are still visiting Australia but they are spending a lot less (in Aus$) when they get there.0 -
We went to Marmaris as my sister had been working out there for a few years and was getting to a Turk. Whilst it wasn't my cup of tea (yes, it's a bit Blackpool and you might get hassled a bit) I can't agree that the whole of Turkey is grim. In our second week we took a 2 day trip that went to Pammukale and the ancient city of Ephesus, both of which were absolutely stunning. And I think my brother-in-law would probably object to being classified as ugly simply because of the country he was born in.
Worst holiday I ever had was in the Algarve.0 -
Worst Holls;

+ Gambia
+ Tunisia - yuk0 -
Never fancied Turkey ever since i saw Midnight Express..............one of those films you never forget.
We've stayed on the Kas Peninsula in Turkey the last 2 years, and having travelled quite a bit, it takes some beating. Charming local town, plenty to do, better food than any we've had accross Spain, really pretty, atmospheric and great people.0 -
Somebody asked about hotels in Australia and budget chains. Sorry I haven't come back before as I've been travelling round.
Australia is very expensive for Brits. Perth astronomically so.
The closest I found to a budget chain was Ibis but 80 pounds a night for that sounds about right!
There are two trains a day between Melbourne/ Sydney. Takes 12 hours and isn't particularly expensive - about the one thing in the country that isn't. You need to google Countrylink. For trains within Victoria you need to google V-link.
I don't know about trains to Brisbane but you can certainly get as far up the East Coast as Newcastle by train.0 -
Kavos in Corfu. Words cannot describe how awful this place is.
Sardinia - a surprising one and not its fault. We went out of season (not recommended) and were bored, came home early:rotfl:0 -

Turkey and Turks come at the bottom of that list.
Totally agree. Once was enough.
Tampa in Florida was scary. It was only a stopover though.0 -

Shame you didn't make the beaches around St Pete/Clearwater - they're superb.
