If the predictions were made on future events how do you know they are accurate? Sorry couldn't resist :)
I have a friend who's convinced that a Faith Healer helped her become pregnant afer 13 years of trying and I wouldn't knock her for that belief. She paid significantly more than £10 per 3 hour session though, if I remember it was around £50 per hour.

I mean as they came true.

    Hi All,

I have to say from the outset that this lady isn't doing it for the money

Money isn't the only 'payment'. She gets to 'big herself up' as someone with special powers, without having to go to the trouble and expense of years of study at medical school. ie in it for the ego trip.

I think we are losing out by dismissing the placebo effect as if it doesn't bring about real healing. The effects are sometimes transitory but other times they do last.

It works on all levels - in tests, people given painkillers with a smart name in fancy packaging report better pain relief than when given the same tablets in cheap packaging and just called aspirin or paracetamol.

If giving a "healer" £10 provokes your own body into healing itself, it's a bargain. That's not much more than the price of one prescription!

This is with the proviso that you have already been checked out by a doctor so that you know what you're dealing with.

I'm not defending the mumbo jumbo that goes with this type of self appointed healer but, coming as I do from an extremely superstitious society I know that people do believe it. The ultimate over here being touched by the hand of a seventh son of a seventh son. Those fortunate enough to be in such a position make a very good living from it, people such as Danny Gallagher http://www.danny-gallagher.com/

    I've been Money Tipped!
I know a couple of people who have been to faith healers and swear they worked. One was for a frozen shoulder and one for a bad back. They had both been to doctors with no joy and, no, they did not pay the faith healers.

I keep an open mind as to whether they can do any good or not but if I had something wrong with me that a doctor could not sort out I may well think of going to one.

My mother in law who is probably the most cynical, miserable, biased person I have ever had the misfortune to meet went to see a faith healer because she was having so much trouble with her neck and back - she couldn't sleep, had trouble walking etc. She had been to different doctors, hospital etc, had medication and nothing worked. A neighbour suggested a faith healer to which MIL was very scornful, negative etc. The neighbour kept on and because MIL was in such pain she went - I think it was for about 5 times and, again did not pay anything. Guess what? It worked!

If it works, then it probably doesn't do any harm.

But in this case it hasn't worked, so I can't see any benefit in going back and repeating the experience, and possibly make your self feel even worse.

Incidently you didn't say what ailment you have that needs healing.

Maybe if you mentioned it, someone might be able to come up with some thing else that might improve your condition.

I don't think "quack" is the appropriate term. Norman Vincent Peale and Oral Roberts were hot on the "Power of Postive Thinking" in the 1950's and 60's. While there's no science to corroborate the benefits the medical profession will freely admit that there can be excellent benefits from a positive mindset. In one case it is claimed that a person cured themselves of cancer through this method.

Now me, I'm a terrible cynic, so you wouldn't find me going to a faith healer but I also believe in the power of Panacea and placebo. In other words: if you think it's doing you good, it probably is.
Excellent proof that it's a load of codswallop :D

It may be codswallop to you and I but to others it's a very useful thing. The mind (apparantly) is very powerful (for those who have one) and can do wonderful things for you. :p

So you went to a faith healer, and now you feel *worse*, and she's trying to convince you that this is evidence that faith healing works and you need more sessions of it?
    Strewth.

Think about it. If you felt better, she'd say that proves it works! Have more sessions!
If you felt exactly the same, she'd say you'd obviously need more sessions as it hasn't had time to work. It's claptrap.
