Thoughts on their own cannot cure cancer, any more than they can cure a broken leg or baldness. Treatment coupled with patient's attitude - their thoughts - may, although unbundling thoughts from treatment to provide clear clinical evidence of how much effect the thoughts have is impossible.

Well you see that's what I would have said. There is at least one incidence of cancer being cured however without drugs and the inference is that it was cured by positive thinking.

I can't say either way if it's true or not.

Sometimes, just sometimes, and extremely rarely, a cancer will vanish of it's own volition. Human beings always look for cause and effect to explain things to them. That doesn't mean that the effect is directly linked to a clear and unamibiguous cause.

I think pigpen has hit the nail on the head! Faith (and positive thoughts) can indeed have an effect on physical health.

Surely, the point is, that the OP is not talking about positive thinking, but about a charlatan (my words) who claims that it is them that are doing the healing. That is what I and a lot of the other posters object to.

I can certainly see what you're saying and in my opinion you're correct. If they didn't pretend and just used their charisma to channel your thinking then I'd be more comfortable with it.

If it's been proven that stroking a pet can lower blood pressure is it so unbelievable that someone else touching us could have some effect? Isn't the rubbing of a scuffed knee just that?

Re-reading the original post I am wondering what the 'healing' consisted of, to make the OP feel so bad afterwards? Were they raking up past events, or did the healing involve something physical?

Does it really matter though? it is like saying someone of one religious belief (spiritualism) is being ripped off by charlatans for having faith in the things they do. We are all entitled to our own beliefs, as a apathetic atheist so long as other peoples beliefs do not hurt anyone or breed hatred of others than they can get on with it.

I think it is a load of cobblers but for those who choose to believe it works then that is their prerogative.

My gran and dad attend the Spiritualist church and have done for many years.. they do the whole medium/healing palava and it all just seems coincidental to me. It is their belief I have no right to tell them they are wrong.

Surely it is better than spending £10 on alcohol or drugs or the sex industry or gambling or a million other damaging things? It doesn't hurt anyone

Often they don't touch you though.. they place their hands over the problem area and channel their own positive life energy to heal.. so no it isn't the same
