If you were well brought up, educated and had any manners you would not need to make a point by writing in bold capital letters. Most people know this indicates that you either have little grip of English grammar or that you are shouting at someone.

    Sometimes.

Sometimes it is simply meant as emphasis.

There are far better ways to emphasise a point than to resort to writing in bold capital letters, such as polite reasoning and making valid informed comments.

We'll have to agree to differ on this point.

When we speak, we put emphasis on certain words and phrases - and that's part of the way that we put our meaning across. Alongside expressions and body language.

We lose all of that when we're writing our thoughts. So, there are different ways to show that emphasis in the written word - punctuation, bold, italics, underlining, capitals and so on. Not to mention emoticons.

So, a couple of simple phrases can be given a multitude of meanings:

Oh my god. I can't believe you did that.

Oh my god!! I can't believe you did that!!

Oh my god. I can't believe you did that!

Oh my god. I can't believe you did that!

Oh my god. I can't believe you did that!

Oh my god!!! I can't believe you did that...

OH MY GOD! I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU DID THAT! :j:j

OH MY GOD! I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU DID THAT!:mad:

The written word is already much more limited - in terms of expression and emphasis - than the spoken word as it is.

So, I don't personally agree with limiting it even further, by suggesting that using bold and/or capital lettering is unequivocally and inevitably ill-mannered.

I got the impression the OP is worried, not because it means she might not have grandchildren, but because she doesn't want her daughter to suffer the heartache of infertility by leaving it too late. I'm gobsmacked at some of the replies on here.

The OP's daughter has worked for the Civil Service for 15 years so I doubt that she's stupid (could be wrong with that assumption though :).)

I too noticed that the OP was already a granny do it wasn't a case of her being desperate for a first grandchild.

It's fine to want to make sure your daughter isn't making a mistake about having children but it's not fine (imho) to make your daughter feel 'you're going on about it'.

Mention it, make sure she knows about early menopause in the family, make sure she's aware of the facts about decreasing fertility - then back off and shut the hell up!

There's been some talk about emphasis on this thread and the fact that you can't always tell what people mean.
I too use bolding or sometimes capital letters to emphasise a point.
I do this to the word I would emphasise in speech.
I can't see anything wrong with that.

I wonder what tone the OP's daughter used when she said 'stop going on about it'.
