    ok , I have an item which is 22 x 14 x 15cm and weighs 220 grams .

how much would that cost me to send 2nd class inland UK ?

The PDF links have been posted several times, both seajays and the Royal mail site show the new rates, the limits are discussed on various threads.

Trust yourself to look it up, not us- what if we get it wrong?

I would make it £5.20- but go and see what you make it and don't take my word for it.

Did you opt for collections too?

Why do they need sorting by size? I thought there was no restriction on RM24/48 only on packages paid for at the post office.

    No, can't afford collections!

Here is the Inland Posting Process:

Each day when you are posting you will need to follow the following steps:

    1. Separate out all your mail into piles of 1st class, 2nd class, Special Delivery, Recorded Delivery and International (OLA). The inland piles will then need to be split down a second time into letters, large letters and packets.

    2. Each item you're posting needs to have a PPI number on it (please see the section above regarding how this is generated and applied).

    3. Each pile of mail should be listed on a separate line when creating an online order within your Online Business Account (OBA). To do this you will need to know the weights for each item you are sending - please list each on a separate line, also separating the items by the weight band they are within (e.g. if you have 20 First Class Large Letters weighing between 0-100g, they can go on a single line, but if you've got another 20 First Class Large Letters weighing between 101-250g they will need to go on a separate line, as each fall within different weight bands).

    4. If you have the Packetpost service, you still need to create separate lines for the different class of mail you're sending (i.e. 1st & 2nd Class etc), but the weights are based on an average. To calculate your average weight; count up the number of items you have and divide their total weight by the number of items. This should be done for both Large Letters and Packet formats separately.

    5. Once you have accounted for all the items you are posting correctly, you need to confirm your order and print off two copies, one for you and the other to go with the mail.

    6. Put all your items into sacks. Separate sacks for 1st and 2nd class mail (split further by format; i.e. separate bags for Letters, Large Letters & Packets), Recorded delivery items should go into a separate sack (to normal 1st and 2nd class. Special delivery needs to go in a separate sack which should be secured with an elastic band.

    7. If you have a collection for your mail take a cable tie and a bag label (red for 1st Class and green for 2nd Class) and secure all of the sacks. If you take your mail to the Post Office, place the paperwork into one of the bags and seal all the bags - please remember which bag you have put the paperwork in as the Post office need to attach an additional label to indicate the paperwork is enclosed. If you do not have the paperwork, the Post Office will refuse to accept it. Any Signed For mail also needs to be presented in a sealed bag as the Post office staff will open it and scan it accordingly. Whether you have a collection or take your mail to the Post Office please add your PPI number and Docket/Order Number from your OBA Sales Order printout.

Got charged almost double yesterday with Royal Mail. £5.60 instead of the expected less than £3 for a 5 inch teddy bear.

My own fault as although I knew prices were going up I didn't bother to check as I didn't expect them to be going up THAT much!

Double check the postage before you put your auctions on now, although I'm not sure eBay is worth doing now. However WH Smiths had a leaflet for DHL so may look at them instead.

£5.60? That means it would have been a small parcel over 1kg (less than 2kg), which by my reckoning would previously have had to go Standard Parcels (and cost £5.30) as 2nd class post only went up to 1kg (this is now 2kg for small and 20kg for mediums). I think you can live with a 30p increase. If it was less than 1kg it should have been £2.60 and you've been over charged.

No, it would have been over 8cm in depth and therefore too big for the small parcel category. I pity the child who receives a teddy bear weighing over 1KG!

Have you read this thread at all? There's a lot of useful info in it.

    phil i'd potentially disagree

by my reckoning the teddy would be £5.65 first class assuming it was more than 8cm thick

(and also assuming the total dimensions were more than 16 cm wide by 16cm long by 16cm deep)

Blimey, I thought you'd just be able to drop off the parcels at the post office without having to have different bags for everything. PO would then check order and put the parcels in their 1st/2nd class bags. No wonder my small local post office wants an exemption!

I only send parcels, so that's just a bag for 2nd class (RM48) and 1st (RM24), with single lines on order as average weight for parcels.

it's the 8cm bit thats gonna catch people out isn't it . If you have a plastic ball that's 9cm diameter and only weighs 50grams it'll cost £5.20 won't it ?

Thanks for useful replies. Actual weight was 0.190 kg and 1st class cost was £5.65. Seemed a crazy high amount to me compared to what I was used to paying, that's all.

I am going to send everything 1st class, and as I only have one foreign parcel today I will send it regular mail... as well as the large letter size parcels. I can't be faffing around with so many bags!
