This is incorrect. No one guarantees you will keep your number (even if you stay with the same provider) But especially when you leave (or join) Sky/Talk talk etc they don't guarantee it.
Well OFCOM say different :- Quote from their website-
"So if you’re staying at the same address and your number is active, your current provider must allow it to be transferred to a new phone company."
Of course if you are moving address and going to a new telephone exchange then you can no longer keep
your old number."0844 COSTS YOU MORE"0 -

This is what sky say on their website:
http://helpforum.sky.com/t5/Broadband-Talk-Questions/Can-I-keep-my-phone-number-when-i-leave-another-company-like/qaq-p/704770In regards to number porting, you can request to keep your exisiting number however it would be upto your old supplier whether they allow us to port your number over to our network.
AND another example:
http://helpforum.sky.com/t5/Sky-Talk-Technical/LOST-TELEPHONE-NUMBER-WHEN-SWITCHING-FROM-TALKTALK-TO-SKY/td-p/39511TalkTalk can refuse to release the number when we ask them to port this over to the Sky talk line rental services.
Once you lose your number, what will ofcom do for you do you think?0 -

Also another with a tale of woe about losing your number when you want to return to BT from Sky:

I'm having MASSIVE problems with O2 at the moment, I have been with them for my home BB for the past 16 months or so. When my 12 month deal was up and I heard Sky were taking them over I wasn't happy, so I asked about leaving.. I wasn't within my deal.
They offered me 12 months free BB, and £200 on my mobile account, but I refused to do so if it meant I was tied in as I didn't want to eventually end up with Sky. So I asked how could I leave when sky came in (bearing in mind I knew due to the cancellation period that there would be SOME crossover). The advisor told me that I could walk away after 30 days.
So I asked, this doesn't mean I'm tied in for 12 months does it? So, for example if sky took over in September I could give my notice and go?
She replied, 'Yes, that's right.'
So I went for it, and I have in the last month received letters from sky telling me that I've moved over. I rang O2 and they said, 'sorry you agreed a new 12 month deal.'
I've since asked them THREE times for a call recording to be listened to, as I know 100% that I asked if I was tied in and she said no.. They've promised it me for over a month now and it's not happened.
I've been with o2 for my mobile services for YEARS now, but I'm just that sick of this terrible customer service that I think I may take the lot away...0 -
I also took the 12 months free and £200, waited a month FTTC became available and left.
I have had my final bills so 02 is history for in BB terms still have my phone.0 -
Scratch all that... I've just been told on o2 online chat that I can LEAVE FOR FREE...
Here's what they said...
"As we've sold our services to Sky, we aren't charging any early termination charges for our customers. "
Needless to say, I've had them confirm this via email AND I'm saving the transcript of the chat too.0 -
Cool just request your mac code they say (or did with me) don't use it within 7 days that means don't be connected with your new provider within 7 days0

Is this via the 'O2 Guru' bit?0 -
Show us your router lone stats
Sorry for the late reply. Please check the stats. Also I am still within the 10 day testing period. (4 days left) I was getting 19mbps with 02 at download and upload of 1.10mbps. If someone could help to see what speed I should be getting at the end of my testing period by looking at line att an noise marg, otherwise I will be calling up Sky... Even though these speeds are really good.
Thanks
