Sky buyout of O2 Broadband

They've offered me 6 months free broadband before when phoned to complain, but I was worried they would put me on a new contract with traffic shaping and usage caps so I turned it down. I am wary in this case too. I am on the original unlimited deal that used to be £7.50 a month (with 02 mobile £5 discount) but was raised to £9 a month sometime last year.
There is no change for a while I think I'll wait and see. What I want to know is if Sky will honour the 02 mobile discount.. is it written into the contract? I presume we won't need to take a sky landline. I also hope that we can be upgraded to fibre without having to take a sky phoneline.. now that would be an improvement.
I always viewed sky as quite a good ISP that is truly unlimited without traffic shaping. Virgin and BT - forget it shaping galore. Good speeds on poor ADSL lines just like 02. So maybe not the disaster some fear.0 -

My 12 months free BB is on the old legacy Standard BB - normal price £9.50pm.0 -
Unless the contract has changed and doesn't mention a buy out clause - be careful. You could be locked in an expensive deal.0

The bit about the cancellation fee is what they told me but some on here dispute it.
I was told that if you leave before the end of the 12 month free, it reverts to standard and you are charged for the remainderDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0 -

they cant do that UNLESS the terms of the contract stipulates that. they would be changing terms of original contract upon taking out the offer of free 12m bb otherwise, and youd still be able to get out free.
i would head caution in the offers guys read the small print of contract and terms. could someone post them up? i would be interested to read it.0 -
I have just spoken to a lady in retentions, and I asked for my mac code. She said I see you spoke to Chris yesterday, did he offer you our latest deal. I said no he did'nt offer me anything, so I asked what the deal is on offer, and she said 12 months free. So I am really pleased to have finally got this. I am on benefit at the moment so it will really help me.
Thanks very much to everyone for encouraging me to ring again.0 -
Thanks for the update, I'm pleased you managed to get your 12-months free BB.

Glad to see a big thread on this, àpropos of my own reluctance to fund Murdoch I finally got around to ringing O2 to get my MAC code this evening (without even thinking of coming on here first).
I too was offered 12 months free. Been with O2 about 5 years and my contract is a rolling one so I'm probably in a better position than most (I'd think, optimistically).
Lady on phone said that as my payment for had all ready been taken for this month and the next one was due next week then all they would do would be to take a pro rata payment for usage and then I'd get it free for 12 months.
Big thing for me was she even suggested I cancel the DD as soon as the pro rata payment had gone out.
She drew special attention to sections of the T&C's that related to contract expectations that worked both ways.
Dare I say it does strike me as rather too good to be true, but I went for it and hopefully I can pull the plug with the least amount of hassle.
Rupert takes my money when I watch a 20thC Fox film or my brief historical adolesent Sun payments for Page3, so I'm not going to be too worked up over another small amount of cash, which I assume will only be collected by bailiffs.
Hmm, too flippant?0 -
I love the way everyone says they refuse to give Murdoch their money because he's a scoundrel...
Right up until they're offered a 12 months free deal to stay.0
