  • Hello ladies,

Room for a small one? I've been lurking on this thread for weeks, and all your discussions have been very useful, and I think now the time has come to join.

I got a BFP on 4th Nov. It's my first pregnancy. I'm very nervous! OH and I had only just decided to stop trying to NOT have a baby (if you see what I mean) and I was pg immediately. We're in our early 30s, and since so many of our friends have tried for years to conceive with no success it just never really occurred to us that we'd get pg so quickly. However stupid that might sound. I really feel like we've jumped the queue! _pale_

I'm trying not to get excited, because I'm likely to have a high rate of miscarriage and premature birth -- I'll spare you the details, but I have a rare urinary condition which makes it much more likely. My consultant says I'm to be very careful to look after myself and see him every 4 weeks until delivery. Which is a bit of a pain when he's 300 miles away (where I used to live, but have now moved), but obviously if it will help prevent a m/c of course I'll go. So I'm pretty worried most of the time, but trying to stay simultaneously positive but not excited!

I saw my GP last week, and the local antenatal(?) team called to arrange my first appointment this morning. They said this 1st appointment would include the first scan, and will be on 3/12. I'll only be about 8 weeks (if that!) pg by then - does this seem a little early? I thought the 1st scans were usually around 12 weeks? But I've never done this before and have no real idea what I'm doing!

Hope you're all feeling well today and you're all coping with this nausea/exhaustion better than me!

  • Congratulations and welcome MrsMuffin and Bumblebee.

Lara it might be worth ringing up the hospital to check they've received your refferal, I thought scans were arranged quite quickly in advance. Hope you manage to get your conclusion rewritten soon. It's not easy to concentrate on anything when you feel sick!

firey I'm showing already but I never stopped showing from DS lol.

Hope the spotting eases up soon Mrs T M.

MrsMuffin I went to see my GP when I found out, but they told me to organise my own midwife appointment with reception (we have doctors, nurses, health visitors, midwives and allsorts at our practice).

Bumblebee the first scan is usually between 10 and 14 weeks but maybe they are organising an earlier one for you if you have known complications?

AFM, my nausea has got progressively worse as the day went on, and it must show as my line manager (who knows) did ask me if I was OK as I was 'looking peaky'. Annoying as it is I do find it reassuring as it means the hormones must be in overdrive!
  • been awake since 4am this morning  so frustrating! it's like once I wake up I'm desperate for a wee then once I get up I'm awake! luckily I'm only working til 1pm today.

Firey Firenze - this is me! for about the past 5 weeks Ive been waking at 1:30/2AM for the toilet and then Im up for a couple of hours. Its horrible!! Im hoping now Im gone 12 weeks that the toilet visits will calm down...

Welcome to the newbies - Mrs Muffin & Bumblebee UK

Hope to see you soon on next thread Chelsea Blue..

& really hope the spotting has calmed down Mrs TM - rest up x

Hope the spotting eases up soon Mrs T M.

It was only the once when I wiped last night, nothing like last time thank goodness. I have been keeping up with the thread, just not letting myself really think about anything past the one thing I do at a time. Most of today was spent cleaning the house and resting.

I've also been eating bananas like I'm starving the past few days! Peanut butter and banana sandwiches (don't ask, it's a North Carolina thing) have been my go-to breakfasts lately, plus if I wake up hungry at 3 or 4, I can eat a banana! Much healthier than biscuits. I think that not being able to eat fruit for nearly 6 weeks is making me go a bit overboard with it now that my body doesn't immediately reject it. :o

I've been reading but couldn't log in, so I'll pop back and catch up properly now :)

Hi ladies and welcome to the new joiners :)

I had my Booking Appointment today, and I'm Very glad I knew what to expect - thanks to all of you!

I'm feeling quite miserable now though. I guess whilst I know I'm fat and clinically depressed hearing that these things is never easy. Add in my mother's enclampsia and whilst the pregnancy isn't deemed Risky, I Am!

It does mean I will need a consultant from the get-go, which I guess is a good thing.

Also they can never get blood from me so I was sent to the next town's pathology clinic for a blood test... And for the first time i can ever remember it didn't have to be from my hand! Which was nice as bloods taken from the hand hurts a lot!

And add in that there was a student midwife Plus I couldnt fill the from out in advance (dyslexic) as it was too confusing... And we overran.... So I have to go back on Wednesday!

    - gee, I was feeling sorry for myself.... Now I'm just laughing! I sound like a right case don't I?? :ROTFL !!

Robots, there was a student midwife at my booking appointment as well. She checked my urine and handed things to the midwife (who I think was a few years younger than me!).

  • Thats good to know mrs T M.The midwife was nice, the student looked like a rabbit in headlights! I don't think she'd done the form before as she was in charge of it but was as confused as me! Add in that I have several issues and I think we can say she learnt a lot!

Also WOW at the long conversation you stared about birthing choices.... Such good reading!

When the midwife asked me what I'd like I said "midwife led centre" or "home birth" and then "but I've a feeling that some of the things I'm yet to answer will impact on my choice!". Odd that they ask that first! However, apparently there isn't a midwife centre in the area! but there is a unit at the hospital.... Erm.. Isn't that just the ghastly section of the hospital with only 1 birth pool and peeling paint and huge wards?!?! So I "had" to put that as its easier for scans etc... But we will have to see. I hate hospitals, suffer anxiety and i think like you Mrs TM would want to try to avoid it!

Peanut butter & banana sandwiches were one of a few things I could stomach before 12 weeks :)

  • Hi all,
Just delurking to give my two pennies about birthing choices.

I wanted to go to the midwife led unit attached to a nearby hospital (only 2 miles further than the others), but by the time the blood test for suspected latex allergy came back I was already in labour. If you are not on a "green" path it's unlikely a MLU will accept you.

I had all the natural stuff on my birthing plan, but a lot of it went out of the window. My worst experience was being in the assessment unit - I was refused painkillers for some reason & I was in agony. No wonder after eventually going through 1.5 hrs of pushing it turned out my baby was the right way round but her head was slightly turned and she got stuck on my pubic bone. So in the end I was really glad I wasn't at the MLU, cos even a gurney ride down the hall would have made me faint (episiotomy & forceps).
It's great to have an ideal vision of how it will go, it will keep you calmer (a bit like planning a wedding). Just be sure you're ready for complications & that your birthing partner confidently knows and can assertively articulate your preferences(and be sure you trust him/her to make choices for you). Just in case.
    Sticky vibes to everyone!
