    Yay becca :)

Jennifer, re your scan + booking in:
    a) take snacks and a drink! We were famished half way through but didn't dare go to the shop incase that was when they called us. I started to feel sick I was so hungry :o
    b) if the scan shows you as 9 wks (or less than 11 wks I think it is if you want the nuchal test done) then they'll simply ask you to come back for another one. Don't worry! Many of the women they see have no idea about biology! They're not going to tell you off :)

    Congratulations thrifty :)

Thanks all. I know I'm a worrier but I don't usually get in a state like this.

Can I ask a stupid question, what exactly is 'booking in'? I haven't been able to see my GP yet and she's not back for a fortnight, so I'll be 7+4 when I see her.

It is the first time you see the midwife (usually). They go through all your obstetric history, your and partners (health) history and family history. It's not a recap of your total life, just a way to work out if there are any relevent health problems that could affect baby or pregnancy.

I honestly can't remember what they do if it's your first baby. Maybe check your urine, BP, discuss scans and what not. Take height and weight measurements.

You don't need to take your OH with you but It's okay if you do. Be aware though that he will be asked to leave while you get asked questions about domestic abuse etc.

It's just a paper exercise, not very exciting sadly.

Not sure if they do much more for your first actually, lily's assessment sounds about right. maybe more leaflets/more detail about the tests they'll want to give you. mine was in two halves so i could take the leaflets about the nuchal testing etc away and have a read and a think.

Becca so pleased for you :) one is plenty i'm sure :D

been feeling fairly miserable and down today and convinced it's all over for no good reason, but feeling a bit better now, just wish i was a time traveller :o

Birdie my BMI is over a certain amount which means i might have a big baby. not entirely sure what's wrong with a big baby but still. also got offered a class like slimming world but without the weight loss but about healthy eating. which sounded like great fun, nothing like being lectured, especially as at the time i could only eat beige food. still not keen on the thought of anything more complicated than a fajita x

Congrats Thrifty, hi to everyone else who has joined.

Am I supposed to book a GP appointment first, and then the booking in one? Bit confused here, sorry :o

Ahh, I thought you were crazy tall or short or something! :o

Lara, I booked a GP appointment then after seeing her and the 'first contact' meeting with the community midwife (where she took blood and urine samples) I was sent an appointment for my booking in at '9' weeks (even though by my calculations I was 8!). :)
Overcome the notion that you must be ordinary. It robs you of the chance to be extraordinary!

  • Lara it might be best to ring your GP surgery and ask, as everywhere seems to have their own rules.

Where I am you book in with the midwife (via the receptionist) for an appointment at 8 weeks, and the midwife then arranges a date for your 12 week scan over the phone for you while you are there. I note other people on here have it all done together though.

I'd ring up as soon as you can to get the ball rolling. When I made my booking appointment at 4 weeks they couldn't give me one until 8+6 and she said if I couldn't make that one then the next one would be 10 weeks!
