Afternoon all,
How's everyone doing with Xmas preparations?
We're having major sleep problems here and it's getting me down. Lo got a tooth 3 weeks ago and had a few bad nights so we brought him into bed to get some sleep. However now he won't stay in his bed all night, in fact the other night he did only 2 hrs! Can anyone help? I don't want to even think about crying it out....but any other suggestions would be great appreciatedNewly Married, not a 2b anymore!! Mum to two wonderful boys!0 -

What are day time naps like?
When he cries at night what do you do, just see if he is okay, clean etc and then leave, or cuddle etc or is it just straight into your bed?0 -
I hear you, I honestly do. I remember when people used to tell me it would get better and I wanted to scream in there face that I needed it better now not 'x' number of weeks. Do you have a sling or carrier? Mine saved my sanity, I remember eating my weetabix and dropping it on his tiny little head because he was strapped onto my front
Generally in most cases reflux is a symptom not a cause and if there is reflux there, something is causing it, milk proteins are a big one. True lactose intolerance is very rare in babies, whereas cows milk protein intolerance is very common, the milk for that type of intolerance can be ordered into a pharmacy but generally costs around £25-40 for 400g so you usually get it on prescription. Some medication may help solve the problem though.
Hang on in there and any help offered, take it. Iv said before on here but I'm a big believer in the 4th trimester theory, and generally after 12 weeks things do get better for most people.
I had a screamer, and one of us held him 24 hours, there was never time he wasn't held unless I had to wee or grab a drink of water or just needed a breather (he'd be screaming the whole time mind)and a bit of a positive, he's grown up to be a secure little boy. He's always happy to play on his own, he's not clingy in the slightest, and so confident and I like to think its because he was reassured when he needed ithugs xxxx
Thanks so much for your post I found this so useful. I feel the doctor knows nothing. He suggested lactose free milk as lo has congestion every morning but no cold, a rash on his face and constant groaning especially at night. He is a very smiley baby during the day but nights are difficult. . Especially his last feed as he strains and groans for hours and not in a newborn noisy sleeper type of way. He had started to smell of rotten eggs every time he broke wind which was getting terribly frequent. At the moment all these symptoms have gone using the lactose free milk but he is now constipated as he's had two formed poos. Again he is happy enough though although he's sleeping more and drinking less which once again has got me worried! Doctor said boiling water for the constipation but I don't want this to go on and on. I've read true lactose intolerance is rare in babies. My OH is lactose intolerant though but I'm not and I've heard both parents would have to be for it to be inherited otherwise in babies its usually temporary following a bug which he hasn't had. Don't know what to think. . The milk is working so far but somehow I'm still dubious. Good news is he is sleeping 7 hrs a night since switching milk though and not straining even though technically he is constipatedhope everyone is well. Sorry for swooping in with such negative posts!!

This is going to make me sound really bad but it's a mixture, sometimes i cuddle and get him to sleep for maybe another hour, sometimes just straight in our bed for my own sanity. He thrashes about and won't have his dummy so I can't just leave him.
Naps in the day are great, 1-2 hrs in the morning and 1-1:45 in afternoon. I've tried putting him to bed earlier, later, giving him more milk, bath time etc nothing is working and I'm exhausted. He's getting too big for his crib so will have to move to cot bed in next couple of months but that's in another room, the though of having to walk into another room hour after hour is depressing me!Newly Married, not a 2b anymore!! Any other reusable nappies folks on here?
I'm having a nightmare day when pretty much every one of them has failed miserably at keeping wet nappies solely on the inside...
This is about the 6th change of clothes today... I'm sure his bladder hasn't massively increased in size, but have no idea why the nappies all of a sudden are going to pot (5 weeks they've been fine...)!!

Have you tried reducing/stopping him from napping so he is sleepier at night?
Harsh, but if you want things to change, you need to change. Have you tried just leaving the light off, seeing if he needs anything e.g feeding, if not, give him a little rub/pat, don't talk and then see what he does. Is his night time routine replicated during nap time, e.g. in his cot with the curtains closed and a quiet room?0 -
We had similar issues with nightime sleep here (daytime no problems) - I'm sorry to say it went on for months. I perservered with the 'gradual retreat' technique, which isn't harsh and doesn't involve leaving them to cry (there was no way I was going to go down that route...), and it worked, but along came another tooth and everything went to pot again. I can really identify with just picking him up and putting him in your bed - you get so desperate for a bit of sleep, you'll just do what you know will work.
I think some babies are clingier than others - I've definitely got the clingy type (although she's also a very stubborn and determined little thing!). I'm afraid I can't really offer any advice as we still haven't cracked it 100% (and tbh I don't think we will until she's finished teething) - other than perhaps look into the gradual retreat technique. One thing I would say though in response to Gwylim's post, is that for us, if LO hasn't slept properly during the day, she gets overtired and struggles to settle at night. This was even more of an issue when she was younger - we knew we'd be in for a rough night if we'd had a day of rubbish naps. So reducing/limiting daytime naps would be completely counterproductive for us.

I agree with Nutella, no day time nap here means he is extremely over tired come night time! and his sleep quality is greatly reduced. The frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.0

Yeah we're the same if he doesn't have his afternoon nap (morning isn't so important) he ends up falling asleep about 7pm which is not great because then it messes his bed time up.
Well tonight oh is on works do so I've put lo to bed and so far he's woken twice, I've cuddled him and put him down. It's done the trick so I'm wondering if it's separation anxiety. Oh is buying us a bigger bed so hopefully if lo does have to share our bed for the foreseeable future, I'll have more spaceNewly Married, not a 2b anymore!! Mum to two wonderful boys!0 -

My son has a milk allergy, he's had it since birth and is 3 now. His father and I do not have milk allergies or any relatives. The smell could be a sign also what his stools look like. My son had terrible eczema too which really improved once he changed milks. How long has he been on the new milk? You should see a difference within 48-72 hours.
