Ladies, what do I need to take a 8month old swimming and where do I get things from :)

We've been to swimming lessons every week since LO was 8 weeks! Bet your LO will love it, mine has a fab time!

    We take:

2 disposable swimming nappies (incase the 1st gets poo-ed - never happened yet....but....!). We've tried Asda swimming ones but found Huggies Swimmers to be the best as they are easier to put on than the Asda ones which are pants - and soooo tight! Most supermarkets have Huggies swimmers, so does Boots.

A reusable swimming nappy to hold everything in (and go on top of disposable nappy) - we have found these to be the best: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Splash-About-Kids-Reusable-Nappy/dp/B000KVMETY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1384631146&sr=8-2&keywords=swimming+nappy - for an 8 month year old you are probably looking at a large one (we are still in a medium but it will only be about another couple of months before its too tight). We found the cheapest place to be Ebay.

2 normal nappies (one to change into, the other just incase!) and wipes

Change mat (padded) - not necessary but easier to change baby on as the floor is a bit hard and wet!

I always take LO in a sleepsuit - easier to get on and off when you still have to change yourself!

I also take moisturiser for babys face (as chlorine really seems to dry her face out!)

2 towels - one for you and one for babs! And your stuff too (I normally have my costume underneath my clothes when I arrive as its sooo much easier!) - I often forget to take my undies to change into when finished though!!!!
Everything all fits nicely into one of those big reusable supermarket bags, even the padded change mat folded in two!

Edit: Oh and Lazywife.....I bought the pinnie....damn this forum!

Edit again: Sorry Mrshaworth2b - you may want to also check that the pool is warm - if it isn't you might want to consider a wetsuit jacket - we bought one like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TWF-Tots-Baby-Wrap-Wetsuit-NEW-DESIGN-Blue-and-Black-Dolphin-0-6m-/251164455338?pt=UK_Sporting_Goods_Sports_Clothing_LE&hash=item3a7a9171aa#ht_150wt_913 - but to be honest we only use it in public pools which are cooler (so it keeps LO warmer and you can then spend longer in the pool) than the hydro one that we attend for lessons - it does make them float a little so is a bit annoying at times! Don't buy anything flash though - they all do roughly the same job - but the envelope ones are easier to get LO in and out of. Oh....and nappy bags/spare carrier bag are useful for the wet swimwear and soggy nappy!
  • Really annoyed with doctors ATM

I have got a burning sensation in my nipples & breasts when LO feeds & for hours after & it hurts to keep any bras on - LO is being treated for thrush nappy rash - so I suspect we both have thrush right?

Also think LO might have reflux as hates sleeping on back, being sick more often & screams in pain after feeds - but I spose could just be wind?

So I visit health visitor on Friday & they agree with me & suggest calling doctor - which I do but there is no appointment so get a call back - doctor pretty much ignores me & just says I am doing a good job breast feeding & no wonder my nipples are sore if I'm feeding every 3-4 hours for 15mins

I've got my 6 week check up with diff doc on Tuesday & will talk to them bout it - but because feeding is getting painful I'm not enjoying it & getting near to giving up

I just feel totally ignored by the doctor - & feel helpless when LO is screaming with pain

    Sorry for the angry post

On a happier note - thank you to the lady who posted about the sleeping bags - I succumbed & brought them along with 2 snow suits!
  • Mrshaworth2b we have been swimming twice now with our DS through Water Babies, he was 13 days old today :)

    We have:

Disposable swim nappy, currently using Little Swimmers - seem to do the trick, no leaks/mess yet but he is only in them for 30mins.
On top of this he uses a Splash About Happy Nappy (was requested by WB team but is like a neoprene failsafe to go on top of the swim nappy).

Then a hooded towel, and a hat to put on once he is dry. Changing mat to get him changed on and a spare nappy, liner, wipes, sleepsuit etc. etc. for afterwards.

Our DS has taken to falling asleep in the middle of swimming... eek! :)

    Hope you have fun :)

Sorry can't comment on the boob bit as we now FF....but yehay to the sleepbags :T- glad someone else cannot resist the bargains posted on this thread too (nutella normally being the main source....although I will take credit for the sleepbags! LOL!)
  • Lazywife I don't know if I should thank you for the jojo code or not. On one hand I was going to order their bookcase, but a good few other things seem to have fallen into my basket including 2 nursing dresses, some weaning bowls and a couple of pinafores/dungaree type garments!
  • nessie I had thrush a few months ago, at my 6wk check actually, and the GP prescribed Clotrimazole cream for me to apply after every feed. I subsequently found you can buy it without prescription from any pharmacy. You will also need to wash bras, anything else that has come into contact with your nipples (towels etc) in a hot wash (60deg) and even after the symptoms have resolved, keep on using the cream for a few days to ensure it clears up properly and doesn't return. Once using the cream my symptoms disappeared very quickly. And btw, 15min every 3-4hrs your nipples really shouldn't be that painful x It really does get easier x

MrsH I've taken A swimming since she was 8wks old. I put my costume on at home so am ready when we get there.
    In my bag I have:
    pack of swim nappies
    normal nappies for after
    wipes (just in case)
    towel for me
    hooded towel for A
    A's swimwear
    my underwear
armbands (we use them in our swimming lesson)
A's clothes for the day (we swim early so I don't get her dressed before we go; just go in her sleepsuit).
Plastic bag for the wet things.
I was using Huggies swim nappies but now A is older I've switched to Asda pull-ups. We use this for swimming. I only get her ready at the pool as swim nappies do not hold wee. My local pool has family changing rooms which have a change table and a seat with straps. So, we go in, I remove my outside clothes, get her in her swimwear. Swim. Get her dressed, strap her into the seat, get myself dressed :)

Ihatedida, lazywife I really, REALLY shouldn't click through on links! Oops!!! Some lovely bits fell into my basket and I accidentally clicked to purchase them :o

Nutella thank you for the list of what you could pack in the pacapod - it has gone RIGHT to the top of my birthday list, it sounds perfect!! :D
  • I don't know why I'm still up; LO is in bed - I should be too!

Thanks Saffagal - I know my nipples shouldn't hurt if breast feeding properly I.e. if LO latches properly hence why I feel ignored by the doc - they didn't hurt a few weeks ago (ok one did every now & then but that's because LO doesn't latch on to that one well because of inverted nipple!) but now they do when feeding (inverted more so than other) & burn for hours after

I will put up with it until Tuesday bu if doc doesn't help then I will try the cream myself - I presume you have to wash cream off before a feed?

Fingers crossed I'm not palmed off again (not first time either - couple of weeks after LO was born I had a really painful lump on tailbone & just got told to take painkillers - it's still there but no pain now but I would have thought they would diagnose something!)

Crikey I'm all fun tonight aren't I? Lol

How & when do you try & get LOs into sleep routines?
