Hi, I was wondering if I could get some advice. My 6 month old will not eat from a spoon if we feed him. He will try finger food and sometimes puts a spoon in his own mouth but presses his lips together if we try. We have been doing some BLW and some mashed foods/pouches/jars etc. It is very early days as we have only been trying solids for a few weeks. I am using very soft tipped baby spoons (similar to his bottle teats). We try and make mealtimes fun, all sit around the table with him in his high chair and try to make it as relaxed as possible. Is there anything I can do to encourage him or should I just give it more time?

Flipping heck! The most I said I'd go to is 3! Does it get easier the more you have? I've read 2 is stressful 3 is easier lol. :)

Don't use a spoon. Makes things like soup and yoghurt a bit tricky but trust me, they're still possible provided you have a relaxed attitude towards mess :D

Honestly, if you're a bit creative you can do without the spoon for a while. I think that's better than forcing him. Keep trying now and then although you might find that you're happy not to bother once you've seen that he can enjoy a varied number of foods without ever having to use a spoon.

BLW purists don't use spoons anyway. I must confess that's a bit hardcore for me and I do use one with Freddie. But it was a nightmare until he could hold it himself as he hated my trying to prise his lips open. Now I just load it up and give it to him. Probably a bit ambitious at six months, so maybe just give it a miss for a while.

candlewax I second Fluff completely, its really not worth making meals a battle. Just put a few bits on the highchair tray and let her have fun!

We've been painting this morning, got a set of little brushes and sponges from wilko for £1 the other day so stuck him in his highchair and let him go mad. Definitely bath night for him tonight after that! Only needed the carpet shampoo twice though ;)

Oh and another ikea highchair fan here! Easy to wipe clean when its covered in food! Or paint...

Candlewax, I've not bothered with spoons either. Just some nice, easy to grab items (stick/chip shapes) like banana, toast, melon, pasta. You'll be surprised how quick he'll learn to grab them.

Think the important thing to remember is that eating "real food" isn't something he knows. He's got to learn about it all from scratch. Anything that makes it to his mouth is a miracle! But the aim is for him to touch, feel, squish and discover all the fun things that you give him. Don't worry about intake to begin with :)

on another note: hooray proper rain! :j:j

bigger 3 are off out later so squeak can get her wellies on and go puddle jumping :D

I hate the bl@@dy rain! Typically the sun decided to run and hide as soon as the school holidays start :(

Our local leisure centre is letting kids under 16 swim free until end of August so I think we are definitely going to make the most of that offer. :D

It's a nightmare being stuck indoors katiechoc. Even getting out for an hour so the boys can kick a ball round the park makes all the difference to their energy levels!

I need to go to asda and stock up on nappies and wipes before we head off swimming and I know it will be packed as its raining. :(
