Morning all, welcome and congrats newbies:T
So cute Nutella! George's new thing is his tummy button, he discovered it last week and now if you ask him where his tummy button is he'll lift his tshirt up and poke it, adorable! Still not talking, he seems to put all his developing into just running faster and faster, makes me flinch when he gets up to top speed as he gets out of control. He managed to fall over at soft play (on the 2% of floor space that isn't covered in mats) and give himself a nose bleed last week.
Anyway, hope everyone's ok, we're off out this morning to get him his first set of big boy pjs as he's finally too long for his 9-12 sleep suits. I'm ridiculously overexcited about itNewborn thread member

I think there is a reason we don't remember most of it moneypenny. We block out all the rubbish stuff so that we'll do it again!
Nutella, super cute! That is all.
Ha wish I couldn't remember the crap bits! I can remember most of the labour (mainly pain and throwing up, although can remember when they first put him on my chest). And the first few months when I really struggled with the pnd. Ah welll, probably a good job as we definitely don't have room for too littlies in a one bed flat!Newborn thread member

Ok maybe all was an overstatement. Maybe it's dependent on how much crap you have to edit out?0

Maybe. Or maybe I've got a defective memory that focuses on the bits I should be forgetting! I'm less against having a second now than I was a few months ago so maybe it'll just take me a while...:o

I don't think I have seen her either, katiechoc.
Nutella, that's amazing!! Obviously very aware of lots of routines and actions that get repeated!! How old is she? Lots of things there!!
Is anyone raising their lo bilingual? I'm trying to speak in Spanish with her, but I speak in English with DH, so I'm not sure if she'll get confused. Also, I don't know if I should say words in both, like milk, nose, bedtime... I talk to her lots more than DH (normal, he works!), and I wonder whether it will be odd for her to hear me in Spanish, yet everything else in English.Quit smoking *1st January 2010*

She'll be 14 months in a week's timeShe's incredibly aware of what's going on around her - OH and I better make sure we're well behaved! You should see her picking up the phone and babbling away and gesticulating like a pro - it's so funny to watch!
Katie, that's very cute that he's found his tummy button0 -

I amI think it's inevitable that they'll get a bit confused at times, but over time it'll be fine - or so I tell myself! Children are incredibly adaptable and I'm sure she'll figure out what's what.
I found this book helpful. It explains how children learn words and languages, and suggests some things you can do - such as when they start mixing up languages because they've learnt a new word in one of them, teach them the word in the other language too, but don't worry too much about them mixing things up as that's a temporary thing. I try to only speak to her in one language, but inevitably as soon as OH is around I end up switching to English as it feels a bit like talking behind his back otherwise! One thing that was mentioned in the book that I found really useful was 'find an incentive for them to want to learn/speak the second language'. English is going to be her first language because that's what she hears at nursery/school, on TV, from OH and when OH and I talk to each other. So if the only person she ever hears the second language from is you, and she knows that you also understand the first language, why bother? So find things that are special that she can only get in the second language. Cartoons, books, people, a playgroup that operates in the second language etc. I thought that was really good advice0 -

I don't speak any other languages so Freddie won't have that chance, sadly. But I do know about language acquisition (I studied linguistics at university). Raising children bilingually doesn't cause confusion. She might use words interchangeably when she's small but it won't create long term problems, nor will it matter that she only hears Spanish from you. Keep talking to her in both languages, she'll acquire (children don't actually 'learn' language, they simply pick it up through exposure) both equally.
Bilingualism a great gift to give a child, IMO."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -
I've been thinking of Sammie too, and also Jannine - hope they're both OK x0
