But if you use factor 50 on your face, you will age better, most wrinkles are caused by sun damage. I too am pale, white Scottish and always protect my face, I am always complimented on my age/skin condition. You could always get a spray tan before going on holiday, that way, you look brown but without the harmful affects.

You would be better of staying white. That way you reflect more of the harmful rays. A fake tan will do the opposite.

A spray tan and a good sun factor does me well, I never get a tan because of that but I like to look tanned on holiday so I either get a spray or use fake.

TBH I can't be bothered with the hassle of it and it looks terribly orange and unnatural on me! I'm just pale and proud these days! Currently I'm blue-white and I'll turn pink-white in summer. OH is currently yellow though and is complaining that he doesn't like it, so it seems we are never happy!!
Well a good one nevers look orange or unatural. If you're pale and proud then good for you, I'll shut up now!

Doesn't the spray tan gradually wash off?

    Just curious.

Yeah but If you get a good one from a reputable salon a spray tan will last a week.

Perhaps these women feel in some sort of competition? I know women like it - if someone puts on weight they (not-so-secretly) relish in that, whereas on the flip side if someone they know loses weight it can really affect them, in a childish/jealous sort of way.

I do admire the posters who said they really don't care and seem to mean it.:) Personally, if I'm honest, I do feel smug when I see people who are fatter than me. I don't comment though, the smug feeling is enough.

Same here! I have never known anyone who is this blunt with others. Why would you want to make someone's day worse!

What irritates me is those who say proudly ' I like to call a spade a f***ing shovel'. It's as if it gives them carte blanche to be as rude as they like all in the name of honesty.

I've been told that I am looking very fat as part of a greeting. It's regarded as a complement in some parts of the world. A sign that you are doing well.

I was a bit taken aback the first time it happened.

I've had that too! It is a shock at first until you realise its kindly meant. "So lovely to see you again, and you're looking a bit more plump!"

    Er, thanks!

Do you really? I find that kind of strange. Due to lucky genetics, I have always been slim (size 8) without any effort and was a skinny (think twiglet legs) child and teenager. I can honestly say that I've never felt smug about being thinner than other people; most of the time I don't notice a person's size unless they are particularly over or under-weight.

My sister on the other hand has always battled with her weight and her natural size is around 14-16, with effort. She's recently lost a lot and is down to a size 12 for the first time since she was about 10 years old (she is getting married soon). Now all she can talk about is how so-and-so is bigger than her, how much slimmer she is than x,y and z etc. So I'm having everyone's estimated dress size pointed out at all opportunities and it's driving me nuts!

Really though, who cares? If your weight is healthy and you are happy, sod what everyone thinks and leave them to their own judgements and insecurities. There is more to life!

I struggle with my weight and I have had the occasional comment, oddly enough not from close friends, just random acquaintances, like and old lady who said I'd put weight on recently (but I was 6 months pregnant and she didnt know so I wasn't too upset!) There's someone I know that keeps telling me I've lost weight regardless of whether I have or not which is a bit odd.

I would never mention weight gain to anyone, none of my business.
