    You're discussing it here :p

Everything is up for discussion.. hair cuts, spots, body hair, shoes so why not weight? If the difference is very noticable of course they will comment, no doubt it was ok to comment when she lost weight so why not when it is heaped back on?

As pigpen says, anything that is noticibly different about a person may provoke a comment from someone that that hasn't seen someone else for a while. The difference here is that weight gain is a delicate topic.

Maybe they thought nothing of it when asking her about her weight - some friends are used to having personal conversations and think that (as friends) it may not be offensive.

I know somebody who when they lose weight they don't shut up about it, telling all and sundry about their weight loss, what they eat / what they don't eat, what they do / what they don't do, what they wear / what they don't wear etc. in infinite detail.

However, when they gain weight they do not want to discuss it.

A bit like the z list celebs who crave any publicity, but when it is something they want to keep to themselves they ask for "privacy" - wanting to pick and choose.

Is your "friend" the same ?

Is your friend cross because her size is being discussed, or because it's a weight gain rather than loss? Most of the bigger people I've know have been happy enough to chat about their weight loss if they've been on a diet but in general friends tend to not mention it when the pounds are being packed back on! I can only imagine you friend has very direct friends who pride themselves on "calling a spade a spade"...not in Yorkshire is she?:rotfl:

It's normal to notice a change is someone's appearance, and some people are just not tactful enough to keep their mouths shut!

    Thanks for the replies:D

pigpen I don't know maybe your right, my friend said she wouldn't ask them if they had any bedroom antics or what they have in their bank accounts so maybe that retort shows she's prickly about the subject?

She did say she never expected the questions

acc72 I don't honestly know if she had a running commentary going, I know she was happy but also she is happy now:D

alilak I think she thinks her weight is her business?

To be honest I just think it's rude! If they're concerned for her (either putting on or losing too much weight) then there are ways to discuss it more discreetly without being rude.

I would never go up to my friend and say, for example, 'Your hair always used to look so nice. Shame it's not anymore', so I definitely wouldn't with weight.

Not sure I agree with this....I have never witnessed someone saying to someone else 'oh you've got a very large spot on your chin!' or 'forget to shave your armpits today did you?'
