Happy Weekiversary Waspeze, well done on getting through a week end untarnished, you can now say you can deal with every day of the week smoke free :)

I saw my neighbours huddled on their doorstep last night & felt very smug at being indoors & warm ;)

    Hi Everyone

i quite new to DFW, i'm normally on the old style board, but have decided today to give up smoking and this seems to be the most used smoking thread on the boards.

i don't smoke that heavily so feel bad looking for support - i don't need NRT as i can already go several days without smoking as long as i'm not put into any 'stress situations' (like drinking in a pub!).

the problem for me is the habit - i found it hard walking to work this morning and crossing the point at which i would normally make and light my cigarette without doing so for example. i also use smoking as a crutch when i'm out in a group of people that i don't know very well - if i find myself running out of conversation i'll nip out for a fag.

unfortunately i do still enjoy it some of the time, although some of the time i really don't. i'm also trying to lose weight and have got it into my head that smoking before or after eating will make a difference to how much of the meal 'sticks' to me!!

i want to save money, not stand outside in the cold on my own, not smell of stale smoke, not have a constant little-bit-of-a-cough-and-blocked-sinuses, and not worry my family that i'm making myself ill (or myself!). so today is the day - i'm quite busy so i think it's a good time, and monday seems like a good time for a new start.

i'm going to keep reading through some of the stories on here to keep me inspired, so many people are doing so well :)

sorry for the long ramble, hopefully it will work out...

Hi bigsmoke and welcome to the DFW smokefree zone :D

Well done on making this decision.... the benefits of giving up far far outway those of smoking despite what the voices in your head say ;)

Is there any way you could vary certain things in your life (e.g walking a different way to work)?
Making the subtlest (sp?) of changes can remove some of the urges for a ciggie.

You will get lots of support and advice (if needed) so keep posting and good luck on your smokefree journey

Cheers Lula :) .. luckily i've only had one really bad day so far so (touching loads of wood) i'm quite excited that this is the one!!

Know what you mean about seeing people huddled outside having a puff .. was like it at the pub on friday .. whenever they came back in they were shivering etc .. i'm sure they wanted to hit me when they saw the big grin on my face :D:D

    Thanks Waspy

your idea of walking a different way is a great one - i reckon i can go round the other way and only add 5 minutes to the trip. i'll go back to the usual route when i've got my confidence up!

i might start cycling to work again as well, as there's definitely no opportunity for rolling a quick ciggie in that journey!

thanks for saying hi - i can see from your sig that you're quite new to this too so i'll probably be seeing you around!

Unfortunately I got complacent last time around (back in March, about page 260 something :rotfl: ) after giving up for three months  .. determined to succeed this time though and will not allow the voices to defeat me :D

I'll be on here most days (except weekends) so will definitely see you around!
If you have any questions or just want a rant, or just want to post to say how your day has been then fire away :)

    Hi Bigsmoke
You've said it all in the above para - you don't need any other reasons and I think it's the same for all of us. Keep going and it's good that you've chosen a busy time to stop.

2 weeks for me today - whoopee! I'm so glad I chose a busy 2 weeks to stop. Nothing happening now till Xmas, so this could be the real test. I do find it very hard to drink a lot of water. It's so BORING!!

Congrats to you too Waspeze. :T Every day gets better.

thanks Waspy and hi Mintoze, congratulations on getting past the two week barrier!

i'm sure i'll be popping in at least once a day, if just for a chat and to see how everyone's doing.

looking out the window at the moment i'm certainly glad that i'm not trying to get out for a fag break :D

    Hey everyone,

excellent work so far & gold stars all round :A

bigsmoke, Waspy is absolutely right when he advised to take a different route to work. I was like you in that I didnt smoke a huge amount but the ones I had were totally ingrained into my routines, habits & sadly - personality :o .

I read somewhere that it actually only takes a couple of weeks to break a habit & I soon learned to live without my mid morning coffee which was the 'trigger' one for me. Happily 5 months ( yes, it's that long already :D ) I can report that I can enjoy my coffee without a pang at all & am sipping on one right now ;) .

Changing habits & routines can be very liberating & I've found myself doing all sorts of different things since I gave up, take the step - you'll love it & wont ever want to go back ;)
