    I want to stop smoking.
I smoke about 20 a day and suffer Bronchitis etc,
I gave up 5 years ago for a year but got addicted to the nicotine gum so eventually got fed up and started smoking again! the patches dont work for me, they give me nightmares and I have an allergy to the glue on them.
I have just read the Allen carr womens book and it did not work for me.
I am now half way through the Original Allen carr book, and although I know everything he says is true, I feel that if i do give up because of the book (unlikely) it will not last.
so i have made the step of booking an appointment with a Hypnotherapist, which i think really is going to be the only way for me to stop for good.
Has anyone had any experience of Hypnotherapy?
he is expensive and i want to know that he is good, There are so many to choose from!
what should i be looking for in a hynotherapist? there are so many that offer stop smoking sessions....my mind is boggling!

    Hi

I stopped smoking on 13th June 2008 and I am using gum for the worst of the cravings, but I have tried different brands in the past and some are yuk so perhaps you could buy a small pack and try if another brand suits you.

I haven't seen a hypnotherapist but that was because I was worried about the cost and whether it could work.

I have tried the Paul McKenna book - it was quite cheap at my local asda and I thought what the hell is about the same price as a packet of cigs ... I don't claim it to be a magic cure (if it was I wouldn't need the gum) BUT it the CD is very relaxing and had helped when I feel stressed early evening (I still miss the after meal ciggie) so for the price it may be worth a try before seeing a hypnotherapist one on one.

I think different things work for different people but again as Sue UU said to me, juice does help also.

This weekend I have definitely had the "should I shouldn't I" conversation in my head but I know that just 1 will lead me to 100 - to everyone stopping tell yourself you've made the decision and you're not going back - that mindframe has been the biggest help to me.

    Good luck

Hi everyone. Wow its verys positive this morning - congrats everyone!!

Wanna - yay 3 weeks here as well. And the best bit its - a completely no smoking weekend!! YES YES YES. (You beat me though because I have had a couple of wobbles)

I am still on the patches, I am going to complete the course this time - before I have stopped early and cracked - not this time :)
To complete the good news, we will not be in our overdraft this month :)
We have enough money left over until pay day next Monday, and even the money put aside for my OH car tax :). What a difference 1 month can make. This time last month, I was overdrawn, paying interest on my debt and smoking. Now, quit smoking, overdraft cleared and all debt sitting on 0% cc. A big thank you to all MSE ers, especially on this thread!!

Changing the subject.... where does everyone (that uses them) stick their patch lol? Today, mine is bottom of my neck - mistake as it annoying me!
So the question is, where is the strangest place you put your patch....I remember when I stopped last time we were in france on hols. I had a patch stuck on my !!!! so that it would not show when swimming :)

(Yes I am clearly still addicted as I am rambling again :)

  • Hi all!
Today IS my last day as a smoker.
I was on here in Aug/Sept last year saying how I just had my 29th birthday and did not want to be a smoker at 30 (only lasted 3 weeks), well time is running out before I turn 30 and I have really had enough of smoking.
As we are in debt my husband and I spend our evenings talking about money while spending £10 a day on ciggs! So I will put my cigg money across to pay off my overdraft. My husband is going to do it also, him on patches and I will try cold turkey.
    Wish me luck!!
Pay off all your debt by Xmas 2012
    Aim £8200
    Total so far £3700
    Left £4500
