  • Yes - I would have thought so as you still had to pay the charges.

And it means that if you get a refund, it'll be a cheque and not go to serving an overdraft or anything!
Almost debt-free, but certainly even with the Banks!

Yes you can but only the last 6 years.

    Regards.
  • Thanks for your responses. We'll go ahead with it.
  • Hi just thought I would add this one in.

i am living in Scotland and so limited to the last 5 years - for those elsewhere, simly adapt the years.

I held an account with the Royal Bank of Scotland from Aug 1999 when i became a student until Sept 2004 when it defaulted from a large amount of charges (for someone earning very little at the time, they were large to me.)

During 2005, I settled the account with the company debt collectors.

I have since discovered that the outstanding balance of £2400 is still showing as due on my credit file with a category "8"

Written one letter to RBOS detailing payment records (taken from statements from my current bank) and demanding that they update my credit file and recompense me just over £2000 in interest that I have had to pay on a "higher risk" loan for car I bought last year. this is £2000 more than I would have had to pay on a loan at a rate of 10%

In the mean time, I wanted to reclaim my charges from the RBOS. But I had no bank account details.

A quick phone call to their telebanking gave me the branch I held the account with number.

The next morning, I phoned them and simply said:

"I held an account with you until Spt 2004 when it was closed down, but need copies of my statements from 2003 & 2004 (the years i could claim back on) as I have been queried on my earnings at that time from the HM Customs & Revenue"

The woman found my account, ordered to statements i needed and phoned me back when they arrived!! No need to pay £10, no hassle, just took ID to pick them up. The statements have by sort code and account number on them, so I have just sent a letter to reclaim £1760.

Will update on the interest payment issue ;) I know the chances are not likely of getting anything, though im certain I have something here on punitive charges. Anyhoo, dont ask, dont get.
  • Hi all,

I am new to this site and would any one please be so kind to inform me if , like myself you have shredded old credit card statements - as i no longer have the card. Therefore I am writing my first letter to aid with reclaiming but do not have an account number to include but can give my old address and D.O.B which should help?

Has this happened to anyone else and was you still succcessful?Or were there any hold ups/problems because of this?

    Many thanks

Hi, I haven't had a result yet but have just sent letters off requesting details of charges for old accounts that I don't know the a/c numbers for.

  • Can you claim bank charges on accounts that are closed? i know you can claim going back 6 years but is that only on currently open accounts?
  • That is also on closed accounts as well.
I have not worked for NatWest Bank since February 2009
