Have you checked your credit file? Sometimes the account number is on there, or at least they may be some further info as to when you opened and closed the accounts. However if you write to Barclaycard and Capital enclosing £10 each you can ask for a full Data Protection Act disclosure where they have to provide all info they hold for you, plus you can ask in the same request for details of all debits and credits on the accounts, they will usually provide copy statements instead.
    Good luck

is there a template on this site for people in this postion ?
  • Just wondering if you found that banks and the other business tried to charge you extra for copy statements?

The templates are in the resource bar above. You need to provide as much detail as possible about the account for them to get the details.

If you have all your statements you can work out what charges you can claim back on and send in the claim with the template letter, however if you don't have the statements, you can make the request for a list of charges (see the main article by Martin) then once you have that you can then send your letter and claim in to the bank, if you spend the time and read through the main article and the relevant threads, there is even a thread for your bank see under 'main bank threads'
    Hope this helps
Thanks to all the competition posters.

  • Hi

First time poster, long time subscriber.

Today I closed my account with First Direct due to the £1800 in excess fees they have charged me over the last five years.

I fully intend to claim from them as soon as the OFT case is through. Will I still be able to claim despite closing my account?

Sorry if this is a silly question.

  • Taken from the site.

You can claim back for six years in England and Wales, and five years in Scotland, both from the account you have now, and any others, including those that you’ve closed down.
Therefore, total up the charges over that period. It’s important to understand we’re only talking penalty charges/fines, not normal account fees.

I would put the claim in now.

i agree, do the claim today
  • ...try and claim back my charges when i've closed down the account with them? I went overdrawn on about 5 occasions, and the charges I incured got me into financial difficulty,so much so, i ended up £1500 overdrawn and had to close the account.

I'm just wondering whether i'll have a strong case even though they could see the last 4 weeks of the account, i dramatically went overdrawn and then had to close it?

They owe me around £700 in charges.

    Thanks!

    Emma
