I want to close my account asap but don't want this to affect me reclaiming my charges. Does anyone know what the rules are? Thanks

    Hi carolinelapey
You can still claim from closed bank accounts, it doesn't matter when the account is closed as long as you are claiming within the 6 years statute of limitations, so vote with your feet and close that account kid

  • Hello
I have a simple question, once everything has been sorted in the courts can I still reclaim bank charges for accounts that have been closed?

    Thanks

    Andrew.
  • Yes.

I claimed for an HSBC account that had been closed for about 3 years :D
  • Hi all. sorry for posting this in two places, but i wasn't sure where was best for getting help!

I am in the process of trying to claim charges from Mint however i have hit a problem. The account with them was closed in 2005 and i do not have my account number. I have written to them informing them of my name, address and previous address, DOB, the date the account was opened and closed and the account limit at the close. They replied to me stating that they could find no trace of my account.<O:p</O:p
    <O:p
I then received my credit report from Callcredit containing my account number and so i wrote a second letter to Mint asking for details of charges on this account number. they have again replied stating that they can find no trace of my account.<O:p</O:p

I am now not sure of my next move. I was under the impression that they had to keep account information for 6 years, in which case the information i have provided them is more than sufficient to find my account. Have i lost this case already as they are insistant that they cannot find my account details.<O:p</O:p

Are there any next steps that i can make? Any help from you all would be greatly appreciated. Has anyone else had a similar problem?<O:p</O:p

    Many Thanks,<O:p</O:p

  • Hi I have searched and can't find any info re. claiming from closed bank accounts. I want to close my A&L account but they stung me earlier in the year and don't want to jeopardise claiming my money back if the account is no longer active. Does anybody know anything about this?

Merry xmas Martin and thanks for all your help and advice. Love your site!! :T

It will make no difference if you close the account.

Have you checked your credit file? Sometimes the account number is on there, or at least they may be some further info as to when you opened and closed the accounts. However if you write to Barclaycard and Capital enclosing £10 each you can ask for a full Data Protection Act disclosure where they have to provide all info they hold for you, plus you can ask in the same request for details of all debits and credits on the accounts, they will usually provide copy statements instead.
    Good luck
