This whole scenario takes me back several years when I was in a similar position to you, OP, though the issues were different.

Stepchild eventually left home to go to uni and never came home again. Still in contact with my DH, but now aged 35, stepchild is in poor mental health....long story, but guess what - I was thought by DH to be partly to blame!
I tried my best to get on with stepchild but on some issues the behaviour was unacceptable so for a while I spoke out.
Eventually I had to keep out of it as my opinions and interventions were not appreciated.
Despite all this DH and I have stayed togetherbut it has not always been easy because of this.
I am not trying to say this will happen to you, just that whatever you do or don't do can have a long term effect.
BTW I am on your side!
