How about catching a cargo ship somewhere http://www.cargoshipvoyages.com/

GlamGirlie wrote: »Hi everyone,
We are getting married in December, and we are struggling to think of a honeymoon destination for January.
We are looking to spend approx £2k each, for a fortnight.
We have already been to Hawaii, Dubai, Bangkok, Koh Samui, the Maldives, and Egypt so need somewhere luxurious that we haven't been to before.
We want to go somewhere that will be special, that we aren't likely to visit again. So places like New York are out, they aren't special enough.
We did consider Bali but a friend who honeymooned there put us off a little.
Does anyone have any great ideas, please?
Thank you!
I have to say, I'm struggling to make your requirements stack up.
To be blunt (you seem to have been blunt enough with skintchick, so I think you can handle it) - you're just not spending enough to make this "once in a lifetime", given your current travel experience and attitude to most people's idea of "exotic".
Ask yourself...what would make the place somewhere you were unlikely to go to again...Main options:
1) Further than you'll travel again - this doesn't seem to be the case, as you've done Hawaii previously - can't go much further than that.
2) It's rubbish and you don't want to go back - I'm assuming this isn't what you're after
3) You couldn't or (more to the point) *wouldn't* afford to do it again... Looking at where you've been before (and the fact that you don't think 2 weeks in NYC would be exotic enough), I find it hard to imagine that you view 2k each as being more than you'll ever spend again.
All these things combined, I think you need to focus on changing *what you do* more than *where you do it*.
Want to make it the trip of a lifetime? Do stuff you won't do again:
Fly first class.
Book out the penthouse in a 5* hotel.
Dine in a 3* restaurant.
See an opera, show, etc that you wouldn't normally spend the money on...0 -
Good call ideophreak. We started our honeymoon in Venice. We took the orient express to get there though which was just out of this world. I'd think more in terms of places and experiences of luxury - one posh beach holiday is much like another in my mind.0

If I had loads of money for a holiday I'd go to Mexico. I would tour the coast for the first week, spending time beside the sea. Maybe exploring a couple of small towns. Then I'd go to Mexico city for the final week. There I would spend time eating all kinds of amazing Mexican food, and drinking beer. I'd go to visit the house of Frida Kahlo and lots of other art galleries. It would be cool to look at the historic murals and also the contemporary street art.
Fancy giving me your £4k? :rotfl::A :heartpuls June 2014 / £2014 in 2014 / £735.97 / 36.5%0 -
We went to Malta, but to be honest we could have been in a hotel down the road because all we wanted to do was eat and...er... go to bed ;-)
Maybe you should save your incredible holiday of a lifetime until your anniversary when you won't be so exhausted from the wedding.0 -
Not so much an idea, but I would reccommend not going somewhere where the chances of food poisoning are higher - trust me it really is a romance killerFinal cigarette smoked 02/01/18

I know you ruled out Venice, but...London Venice on the Orient express. You could go one way and fly back within budget...just.0

Blackpool.
Pretty 'exotic' for somebody used to Hawaii and the Maldives, and I bet you'd never go back.0 -
The Carribean is lovely. I've been to the Dominican Republic and Cuba - they're both green and hilly on the interior with beautiful beaches on the exterior.
Another option might be Niagara Falls (Canadian side is best).0 -
Have you considered a cruise?
We went on a holyland cruise for our honeymoon and it was really amazing, the days at sea were a perfect way to relax after the wedding, service, entertainment etc on the boat was fantastic.
The ports were exciting and seen many wonderful places - Giza Pyramids, lunchtime cruise on the Nile, Alexandria, Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Athens, Pompei, Sorrento and finished with 3 days in lovely Rome.
Although we paid over £2k a person for it (But we did have a suite - cheaper options were available) and some of the cruise line organised excurisons were very expensive - but we thought it was our honeymoon, we wanted to relax and not have to deal with making sure we get back on time etc.
I am not sure what cruises would be available in January, but I think there is a middle East cruise, or a South America one - both of these sound wonderful to me. I personally wouldn't choose a simple mediterrean one (France, Spain etc - first of all its much colder) or any departing from the US (not a fan - and wouldn't want to do the 3 nights post cruise saty in the US).Weight loss challenge, lose 15lb in 6 weeks before Christmas.0
