Part of the problem is self inflicted - the original point of a honeymoon was as a first holiday together to cement the relationship away before the grind of normal life hit home. If you've been to half the best places in the world, spent enough money to need to get an IVA, and then decide to get married and look for a once in a lifetime holiday that seems more special than what has already gone before, but on a pretty limited budget, its going to be hard.

On that basis you need to be looking for things that are special to that time of year - talking to a decent independant travel agent might help. I did hear one talking on our local radio about a "Northern Lights" cruise which would be a January thing rather than an all year option - but it would be cold. Friends of ours did an Antarctic cruise - again cold though. Beyond that maybe something around the area where they filmed the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit in New Zealand - would be the warmer season there, maybe a safari in Africa, trip to the Falkland Islands before the Argies lay claim to it? There are probably options there that would fit within the budget.

  • Not sure about the weather, but recommend Sri Lanka, you could have a week touring with private driver and then week on the beach or split it with week in Maldives. Beautiful scenery, people, and wonderful culture, be warned their cuisine is HOT, but very tasty :).

Maybe you should save your incredible holiday of a lifetime until your anniversary when you won't be so exhausted from the wedding.

Good point, although we just delayed our honeymoon for a few weeks.

I agree about Venice, we went there for our honeymoon and it's my favourite place in the whole world, but it might not be at its best in Jan.
How about Florida Keys? Magical and will be lovely at that time of year.

I disagree with venice not being at its best in January. Winter is the best time for the real magic of Venice IMO, but during carnivale would be outstanding for something season if it ould be delayed just a wee bit. But it's not hot.

Op, forgive me but.....you are putting a lot of pressure on this. No place that's wonderful is worth 'only visiting once' and you have been to some wonderful places. Go somewhere super, of course, but in making it the 'ultimate' won't all anniversary holidays be 'not as good' in your mind?

I think Weston Dave's post is excellent.

Yeah, hard...but not impossible...there are some things that can be done without spending much money, that feel "once in a lifetime"...For instance, on my honeymoon I saw a rocket launch from the old Apollo mission control centre. Probably only cost a few pounds for the day, but was an experience I'll never forget :)

(not least because of the 110 degree heat sat on metal bleachers for 4 hours...but that's a different story ;))

Australia? Exotic IMO, Far enough away that you might not go again, rosting hot in Jan, beautiful beaches, Great Barrier Reef, rainforests, unusual wildlife etc...

    Just a thought! :)

I agree that 'once in a lifetime' doesn't have to cost a fortune! We did our honeymoon on a fairly limited budget and had the best time of our lives! We spent money on the things that mattered to us as a couple - so a fancy hotel wasn't a priority, but experiences were. Like idiophreak said, they'll be the things that you never forget - not the thread count of the sheets on your bed :) You just have to figure out your priorities and spend accordingly.

Man, I wish I could go on honeymoon again!!! :rotfl:

I think a honeymoon is a state of mind and actually you could go anywhere and I would be magical.

My son and his wife went to the New Forest took their bikes booked a really good hotel and had a fab time. They have lived in many different countries and wanted something different.

Honeymoons are about romance not spending the absolute most you can. Book somewhere you will enjoy and that's different for everyone.

The only problem with Australia is that when you get there it is eye wateringly expensive. You really don't get much bang for your buck.

We went to St.Lucia which was lovely, but the Grenadines are supposed to be 'paradise on earth' - never been so I couldn't comment!
