Honeymoon ideas, please?

I read the OP and wondered if it was a wind up...was I the only person?
Well if nothing else it was very braggy - I have this to spend and I have been here, well many of us have and don't feel the need to tell all, plus the OP was very dismissive of SkintChick when she suggested Venice by saying they wanted "Something special not just another holiday".
Well not everyone can afford the likes of Hawaii, Dubai, Bangkok, Koh Samui, Maldives and Egypt, and considered Bali with New York not special enough!
I bet SkintChick had a brilliant Honeymoon and as I said earlier 'Holidays/Honeymoons are what you make of them, it's the company you are with and the location you are at that makes for great times and treasured memories.
You don't have to spend a fortune to have a brilliant time and it does not have to be a once in a lifetime holiday for it to be the best holiday/honeymoon you ever had'.Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.0 -
I think a honeymoon is a state of mind and actually you could go anywhere and I would be magical.
My son and his wife went to the New Forest took their bikes booked a really good hotel and had a fab time. They have lived in many different countries and wanted something different.
Honeymoons are about romance not spending the absolute most you can. Book somewhere you will enjoy and that's different for everyone.
My husband is not English. He thinks the new forest is absolutely magical
That's the thing about 'special enough' it depends on the beholder, and like beauty, special is in the eye of the beholder.0 -

I would second the thoughts on Australia and cost. The exchange rate is not kind to us at all at the moment.
We just came back from 5 weeks in Australia for our honeymoon and tipped the scales at well over £15k all told - and that's not eating out at fancy restaurants or staying in 5* hotels.
On the plus side, it's an amazing and diverse place, and you'll see things there which you may not see again (or at least often) so I'd say it'll tick the boxes for exotic.0 -
The exchange rate in oz is indeed really bad right now but in that case it could fulfil the once in a life time bit - in case it never changes again!
I spent 3 months there in 2011 and I didn't spend anywhere near £15k but we were back packing & it certainly cost us more than planned.
I think the op is almost searching for something that doesn't exist. I've been to many places around the world too but because of that & because I spend all my spare cash on travelling I don't view really anywhere as 'once in a lifetime' but more the experiences. For example what idiophreak said- a cheap day out but what they saw truly was once in a lifetime. I wish one of our times in Florida had been at a shuttle launch, I have a friend who was there by chance & they said it was amazing.
And that could apply to many places around the world. I went to Sydney for New Year's Eve, and that probably will be a once in a lifetime experience for me, and the cost of that was just a towel to sit on and some snacks! I'm sure ill go to Sydney again one day though but just not for new year.
So perhaps the Op needs to look at something special that happens in January somewhere, an event of some kind.
I've been to Hawaii a few times but I really want to go back in January to see the humpback whales at their peak.0 -
Rio de Janeiro is amazing - if you hang on till February you could do carinval which really is a once in a life experience. And hot enough. Argentina is also worth a look - Buenos Aires is a lovely city with lots to do, you can hop across to Uruguay, go up to the Igazu Falls, down to Barioloche for skiing, Mar del Plata or Villa Gessell for the beach. It will be winter, there, however, so watch temperatures in the south particularly but last time I was there (a while ago now), women in Buenos Aires were not beyond fir coats and sun glasses in January! Those of us from England only ever needed a cardigan - at night, not during the day!
I like Mexico, Sri Lanka and Jamaica but you do have to watch where you stay - your budget is high enough to be selective, however. I once paid a small fortune for an expensive holiday in Mexico and it was worse than going to Benidorm in August for drunken, sex, sun, sand 'Brits abroad'. Some of the lesser known Caribbean islands are very expensive and may give you some of the exclusivity you are looking for but if you like something to do and see rather than sit on a beach and relax, you might be disappointed with the 'trips' you can do - so some research would be worthwhile if this will bother you.0 -
How about Cuba? or the Dominican Republic? DD went to Cuba on honeymoon and loved it, my Sis married in DR and she loved it there too.0

How about Santorini. Its supposed to be stunning with volcanic beaches, incredible views and beautiful sunsets. You could go on a romantic sunset cruise. Its not as far from home but still a fantastic location with scope to stay at 5 star hotels and eat in luxury restaurants.
Sorry, I've noticed you want it hot in January. Barbados or SeychellesThe forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0 -
We had a similar budget but decided on a last minute honeymoon to tunisia( a place we had never been) and keep some money for a break to NY.
It is about little things you do whilst away not the destination, ie we took a calm ride in the Sahara. I'm sure well not do that again.
We never did get to NY, we had a honeymoon baby instead!0
