  • Yes I censor the television as every responsible parent should. Radio 4 is generally free from foul language. Would I let them listen to foul mouthed rappers for example? No I wouldn't.

Yes I believe bullying is often poorly addressed. My own nephews have been the subject of horrendous bullying in school. I know a number of children who are home educated because the schools couldn't (wouldn't?) stop the bullying.

No we don't travel on buses, go to football matches or concerts unless you mean classical music which is fairly tame. We did hear someone swearing loudly in the street during last summer and I explained that some people have mental health problems that aren't treated very well. TBH he might have just been drunk but I gave him the benefit of the doubt as it was the middle of the day. Please don't worry about my children. One is already grown up and happily married and in a good job. I'm sure the others will follow suit in due course.

You best make sure they aren't listening when 'V' is broadcast then.

Thanks for your reply. I can't say I agree with your views but the world would be a dull place if we all did.

TBH we don't listen to too much radio as we prefer the art of conversation.

I understand your need to protect them but surely you can't shelter then all their lives?

Plus i'm a little offended that you said someone was mentally ill for swearing, it somewhat belittles mental health problems (and as someone who's mentally ill for the record i don't go around swearing loudly in the street ;) )

Perhaps it could be a topic of conversation? Or a little too working class for your household?

Indeed it would. Just to show my view isn't an extreme view I thought I'd post the view of the author Terry Deary (Horrible Histories) who does have quite an extreme but amusing view.

"I've no interest in schools. They have no relevance in the 21st century. They were a Victorian idea to get kids off the street. Who decided that putting 30 kids with only their age in common in a classroom with one teacher was the best way of educating? At my school there were 52 kids in the class and all I learned was how to pass the 11-plus. Testing is the death of education. Kids should leave school at 11 and go to work. Not down the mines or up chimneys, mind, but working with computers or something relevant. Everything I learned after 11 was a waste of time. Trigonometry, Boyle's law: it's never been of any use to me. They should have been teaching me the life skills I was going to need, such as building relationships, parenting and managing money. I didn't have a clue about any of these things at 18. Schools need to change."

and this quote of his is quite funny too.

"I'd rather cut off my left arm and eat it with Marmite than go into a school - and I don't even like Marmite - but I'd consider going into schools to rescue my books. "I detest schools with a passion. My main beef with schools is that they are an utter waste of young life because they don't educate. Education is preparing someone for life and schools fail to do that. "If I could bulldoze them I would, and I do have a petition running on my website to close all schools and set children free"

Sorry OP doesn't really help you except to show not everyone thinks you're weird for keeping your children at home.

    Just ... wow ... I'm speechless.

What on earth are your kids going to do when they turn 18 and enter the real world? Never been on a bus, thinks swearing is a sign of mental illness, only ever listened to classical music??? I don't see how it can be a good idea to totally shelter your kids from the realities of life. Sure, you want them to spend most of their time with "good" people who hold similar values to yourself - but you can't pretend that the "bad" sort don't exist, or lead your kids to believe that such people are mentally ill.

I didn't (and wouldn't) suggest everyone who has mental health problems would swear in the street but from his demeanor something wasn't right as I previously explained. It didn't feel right to undertake an interview with him to ascertain the exact reason for his behaviour.;)

There is no way to shelter your child from the horrors of real life. You can only prepare them for it. Preparation is about facing things, whether you like them or not. Bullying occurs in many places outwith school in adult life, you can't avoid it, but you can learn how to properly deal with any situations that occur.

I have to agree with this.

I do not think the way we educate our children is a good one. It fails a good many of them on various levels.
