I doubt you would find a Wiganer who would agree with that.

Thank you very much for all the help, very surprised with the amount of replies :).

Ok, heres a little more information that may be useful..

    Rented House
    2 Bedrooms
    Central Heating
    Double Glazing Windows

    Monthly Rent: £450
    Weekly Rent: £112.5

We do not mind moving a little out of the area, but not as far Wigan, Liverpool & Warrington.

Area: We are looking for a quite area, that is away from all the busy areas, hopefully to avoid as much trouble as possible. However, within travel distance to the town centre for the supermarkets, shops etc. We will both have cars, so transport will not be too much of a problem. Apart from that, there is not really any other demands such as school etc.

This is the house we had in mind, whats the area like?,

Had a look on google maps, street view, and looked really nice. However, I am going to stay away from the area due to the reviews on here.

Please keep all the advice coming, its very much appreciated :).
  • That house isn't in Clock Face, it's much nearer to Sutton looking at the map.
The Four Acre Estate in Clock Face is the place to avoid.
  • A lot of people are criticising Clock Face, but to be fair, it is the Four Acre estate that is an undesirable place to live. Years ago, we had a bridge over the old railway, and 'the other side of the bridge' has always been a good place to live. The bungalow estate, Abbots Hall Avenue, Cranshaw Avenue, and Finch Close is lovely and very rarely has any problems. Crawford Street and the surrounding streets are also decent places to live. You don't tend to find large gangs of kids/teenagers in this part of Clock Face, although there are plenty over in the Acres. It is also only ten minutes away from St. Helens town centre, Widnes centre, Warrington, and M62.

A shopping area with Tesco, chemist, library and community centre is about a mile away. Sutton Leach is a decent area, and several parts of Sutton are also quite nice. More expensive, but a good place to live, is the Newbold estate. In the northern part of the town are Eccleston, Dentons Green, Windle, and Rainford.

Rainhill is lovely, but a nightmare to drive through, especially during busy times of the day.

The town itself is rundown in many areas, as are a number of industrial towns, but it has reasonable retail parks, a lively nightlife (so I have been told - at 44 I don't really go clubbing anymore :rotfl:), several decent parks, and good social care for older and/or disabled people. The council gyms are reasonable priced and have recently been modernised.

The largest local social housing, Helena Partnerships, is currently building new properties, as well as refurbishing older ones. They also run a number of schemes for both residents and non-residents, including low cost fruit and veg, grants for local community groups, and free room hire for groups.

Transport links are excellent in St. Helens, with easy access to motorways, modern train stations, and a good bus service in most areas.

There may be other towns that are 'better', but I am happy living in St. Helens and have no desire to leave my adopted home town. It is a friendly place and I have never felt unsafe here.
  • Having looked at Rightmove, if you aren't fussed about a garden, I wouldn't rule out the houses in the town centre either. After all, the local MP (Sainsbury's millionaire) Shaun Woodward lives in one of those terraced houses!
Parts of Haydock are fine too.

I had a quick look on rightmove, and that house does look nice, it's not in a bad area actually, not near clockface, or 4 acre, it's at the back of junction train station, and around here there is junction lane, with some shops.
There is a morrisons just a 5 min drive away. And town is about 10-15 mins drive away. And your just near the M62.

Can you not drive down a few times and take a look at the area.
For £450 your getting something nice, as i did look at other houses on that site, for that price and most were older terraced 2 bedroomed houses.

lives nextdoor but one to my mate, but she's never seen him there.
  • OP, that house is definitely in Sutton, but one of the better parts. It is on a small, newish estate, but is next door to a scrap yard. It is also next to the train station, which might be handy, but may also be noisy. You have Sutton Leach between that house and Clock Face.

For Clock Face, move the map to the right, along Reginald Road and Mill Lane. At the roundabout, move the map southwards. When you reach the green playing fields between Clock Face Raod and Crawford Street, you are in the decent part of Clock Face.
