if we had a rough idea of budget and what size house we could suggest areas for that budget...

I grew up in St Helens but, having left 10 years ago, it would take a lot to get me to move back there! My parents and brothers still live there though and are perfectly happy with the place. Dentons Green is a reasonable area and not so expensive as some of the posher bits.
One thing St Helens does have going for it is decent transport links - particularly important since you'll be lucky to find a job in the town! You can do anything, make anything, dream anything. If you change the world, the world will change.0 -
I'm next door to StHelens in Prescot. You should look around Rainhill; Eccleston and Old Lane area of Prescot.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

although the transport links in wigan are slightly better with the M6 running straight through Winstanley (which is lovely btw) and the M61 in Hindley, M58 in Orrell (also nice)Little Lowe born January 2014 at 36+6

I would say Sutton leach rather than clockface (just around the corner) It is nicer (leafier).
I gre up there so i do love it. It has been run down and it is very sad to see the poor chages that ahve been made in some areas. Wigan does have better shopping, but it is only 20 mins away by train or car. Infact the whole of the North West is really easy to get to. Liverpool is 15mins from Lea Green station.
However the bus service is fantastic in St helens. Buses run till gone 11pm. Compared to where I live no in a town comparable to st H but 7pm is classed as a 'late' bus.
But I would go and visit a few times.0 -
...To be fair I would definitely say an improvement on Blackpool.
Having lived v.near to St Helens, and now living in Blackpool, I would say that ain't fair - each has bad, average & very nice areas, it all depepnds on how much you want to spend on your home, same as anywhere.
OP, what's your budget and what do you need in the area? Schools, transport etc?0 -

True. Though St Helens also has a good link to the M62, in addition to the M6 being only 5 mins down the East Lancs.
Plus Wigan is full of Pie-eaters. As far as I'm concerned it'd be a fate worse than death to have to live thereYou can do anything, make anything, dream anything. If you change the world, the world will change.0 -
Why don't you just move to St Annes, Poulton or Wrea Green or some of the more rural areas on the outskirts of Blackpool?0
