St. Helens, Merseyside

Hi everyone!
Me and my partner are looking to move to the St.Helens area in the next few months for our first house.
We would like to know what it's like there, if anyone could help us? We are from a busy area at the moment and wanted to move somewhere smaller, quieter with less crime rate.
What is the crime rate in St.Helens generally like?
How big is the town area for shops etc.?
Anything else that would be useful to use, please let us know.
Thanks.

Like anywhere else it has nice areas and not so nice areas. Why there specifically if you don't know much about it? There are nicer areas in the vicinity; Culcheth, Lowton, they have Warrington postcodes but are a short hop down the East Lancashire road. We have relatives all around that area and visit quite often.0

I was going to put it more diplomatically than that lol
The crime rate can be found here

I dont like St Helens in general, as a town centre etc but there are parts that are nice, such as Billinge - thats between wigan and st helens - its a small village with pubs, shops etc and minutes away from bigger towns. St Helens its close to the East Lancs Road, so theres other areas taht are minutes away that, depending on what you are looking for could be suited to your needs.0 -

We choose that area as it is not to far from friends and family.
Could you please tell me what you all seem to think is bad about the area? We heard it was a nice area, quite surprised at the replies on here.

Like most industrial towns it has been run into the ground, so what was once a decent town for employment, now isnt and the result is the gradual decline into a town full of Jeremy Kyle contestants.
I honestly think when I walk around town that I am in that bar full of mutants in Star wars0 -
