  • Back in June my wife and I experienced an eleven hour delay on our flight out to the Dominican Republic. Granted we were given several £5.00 vouchers to buy meals during our long delay which nowhere near covered the actual meal costs but the e lack of actual information was diabolical? However, our arrival in the DR the Thomson agent assured us we would receive a letter from Thomson confirming the delay was caused by mechanical problems resulting in a new aircraft being required which could be used when seeking compo from our holiday insurers. This letter was forthcoming later in the first week.

On our return to the Uk we consulted the MSE website and using the advice and template wrote to Thomson Airways. Our first letter together with all the required attachments was sent normal delivery but not having received a reply after fourteen days we sent another letter via Special Delivery and within four days received a telephone call from Thomsons confirming that we would be receiving a cheque for £960 (2 x £480) to compensate for our long flight delay.

Well done to MSE for their advice and template letter. My wife and I are well pleased with the outcome. We would recommend following the MSE advice should they encounter flight delays.
  • I wrote my initial letter to Thomson at the end of June and then had the standard "exceptional circumstances" letter come through.

I wrote an LBA over a month ago, but just received a letter and a cheque for €1200!!!

That has been resolved so much quicker than I was expecting.

Well done and thanks for posting; it's encouraging to hear a success story.
May I just ask who you addressed your letter to?

    That's great news, well done.

I sent my NBA yesterday giving them 14 days to respond, hope I'll get the same result as you did. If not, I will be taking it all the way but hoping it won't come to that.

Congratulations on your success. It's amazing that they settled your claim so quickly, usually they just fob everyone off and hope they'll just go away so maybe they've had a change of heart?? Hope so.

I just wanted to encourage everyone to continue trying with Thomson. Only after reading some of your posts did I decide to write to Thomson about a delayed flight I was on last year. I got home this evening to find a letter from Thomson with a cheque inside for £637 (equivalent to €400 each), cue some screams and dancing around the living room!

So please don't give up, they are paying out!

I find this hard to believe after all this time that Thomson are suddenly sending cheques in reply to NBA letters? Are these posters genuine or employees of Thomson?

I am very surprised as Thomson will possibly now have even more claims submitted?

Can the lucky claimants post on here what their claims were actual for please? Maybe that will help other claimants who have been refused compensation but had the same circumstances in their claims. Me included!
  • bigmama1 - My flight was on the 15th of June 2014 flying from Gatwick to Puerto Plata.
The delay was over 11 hours and caused by the fact the flight from Puerto Plata to Gatwick the day before had a technical problem, so my flight was delayed as a result of the knock on. They flew a replacement plane down from Manchester in the end. In their letter yesterday they admitted the delay was as a result of an operational issue.

I agree bigmama, it's not like Thomson to give in so easily. Having said that, the first one might be genuine as he posted previously (about 10 pages back) and replied to your request for more information.

The second one however, I just don't believe it. No previous posts and no details given, just urging people to claim. For this reason, I believe he/she could be an ex-employee or someone getting back at Thomson because their claim was rejected. Might even be someone's idea of a joke, who knows?

Similar circumstances to my own claim previously. Started with a technical problem and departed 24 hours later. Had another 24 hours delay on return flight. Tech fault was later changed to extraordinary circumstances just before it went to court! Thomson claiming adverse weather conditions and the Spanish air strike. I could prove both of these claims didn't effect my flight but unfortunately had a useless judge who did not grant me a hearing as requested and went ahead and made his decision on paperwork alone! I then of course could not present my proof against Thomson's claim of extraordinary circumstances!

I do believe that the judge made an error in his judgment but unfortunately due to the stress and my ill health felt that I could not proceed with an appeal. I'm bitterly disappointed as this compensation would have been a last holiday abroad for my husband and I. Ah well it only took a year of my life, wasted!

I obviously still read this forum and enjoy reading the success postings and wish good luck to everyone.

bigmama - your case really is shocking treatment by the county court system. I hope, like me, that you will tke great pleasure in writing a stinking letter to the judge pointing out the error of their ways when Jet2 is either refused leave to appeal, or defeated in the SC.
